Regent - Dirty Little Sinner
Regent are a Southampton four piece they are Ben Rooke (vocals), Chris Woolf (leadguitar/keys/piano), Luke Trundell (bass/guitar), George Grattan (drums).
They are a band who like to combine blues with some straight up unadulterated Rock’n’Roll. Taking inspiration from the seminal songbooks of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones and the masterful melodies of their many Brit Pop acolytes, Regent revel in the works of those past masters and are determined to carry their mantle on to a new generation.
With a string of accomplished singles to their name already, the four piece have received airplay from BBC stations nationwide and received support across the blogosphere with Spill Magazine praising them as:
a great example of new british rock ‘n’ roll, Britpop for a post-brexit generation.
Turning the amps up to 11, ‘Dirty Little Sinner’ matches the gritty southern stomp of US heavyweights like the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Black Keys, with the irrepressible hooks of UK earworm merchants like Oasis and The Fratellis.
The new single Dirty Little Sinner was initially written and recorded at Purple Square Studios in Southampton back in the Summer of 2016. Intended for immediate release following their debut single in 2017, the untimely passing of their manager, Bruce Replogle, turned the band’s world upside down and saw them make the decision to lock away the track in the archives for the foreseeable future.
After a time of reflection, Regent return reborn and reinvigorated in 2020 with a feeling that the time is now right to release the spoils of that 2016 session for listeners everywhere to savour.
It has been given a sprinkling of rock’n’roll golddust courtesy of Brit-Pop mastermind Fraser Smith (Shed Seven) and Dirty Little Sinner was released on Friday 14 August.
A song about casting of the shackles to be the person you want to be, Dirty Little Sinner is loaded with a tangible feeling of release and a revolutionary spirit. Taking us inside the track, frontman Ben says:
The song is about and dedicated to all the doubters that put you down, and try to spread their negativity from their world into yours...Hey you Dirty Little Sinner, you better change your ways if you wanna be a winner oh!' The opening lyrics really express this.
Dirty Little Sinner straight from the get go has a real rock’n’roll swagger about it, not sure if it’s the fuzziness of the guitars or the blistering bass but it certainly grabs you by the collar and smacks you straight in the forehead.
The track has a real rock blues feel to it with its heavy bass lines, as a comparison think of The Black Keys and this suits Rooke’s deep vocal, but the cleverness of the song comes with its more poppy guitar riffs and witty lyrics more akin to Blur and it’s this mix which gives it a real start to finish appeal.
Whilst Regent were already playing to sell out shows (pre lockdown) in their own area, Dirty Little Sinner is the type of song that will bring them countrywide attention, it is a real showstopper of a track.
