The Mono LP’s - Hell, Save My Soul
The Mono LPs are a dynamic Liverpool outfit self described as “rock'n'roll… with a cello”, the quartet comprises frontman/guitarist Ste Reid, cellist/vocalist Vicky Reid, bassist Chris Barlow, and drummer Tom McCabe.
Championed by BBC Introducing and BBC 6music, The Mono LPs are considered one of Liverpool’s bright young prospects.
The band have just signed a record deal with London’s Fretsore Records, expressing their excitement about the signing, the band say:
We are so happy that we have found a home for our second album. We have been waiting for the right people who understand the concept of the album and we feel Fretsore Records get us as a band and our music. We are looking forward to this exciting new beginning.
Of the signing, label owner of Fretsore Records Ian Sephton states.
As soon as I heard the songs from the new album Shuffle/Play, I had no doubt we had something very special on our hands. Having built a solid reputation and following on Merseyside, our challenge for the rest of 2020 with the album release in 2021 is to extend this to the rest of the UK and hopefully beyond. And it's not every day you sign a rock band with its own cellist!!
The Mono LPs’ first track with the new label was Hell, Save My Soul appropriately released over Halloween weekend, on Friday 30 October.
Hell, Save My Soul opens with a booming bluesy guitar riff accompanied by some stellar drums which set the tone of the track and then we get the powerful rock vocal of Ste Reid, which complements the instrumentation perfectly.
The underlying cello really adds depth to the track and elevates the sound from traditional bluesy rock’n’roll to something just a little more ear catching and engaging whilst still giving a heavy nod to the 70’s rock giants of Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and the like.
Even lyrically there is a huge nod to the 70’s, with the fire and brimstone and rock is evil etc when they sing “Hell! save my soul cos the world keeps bringing me down, Hell! save my soul cos the world keeps bringing me down”.
Hell, Save My Soul takes a retro look at rock’n’roll but giving it a huge contemporary twist with the fabulously cello skills of Vicki Reid.
Their new album Shuffle/Play is confirmed for release on their new label in 2021and it will be interesting to see what influences they draw on to produce it. It’s an album that will be worth waiting on.
