Gold Baby - Versailles

Dreamy grunge pop fermented with the knotty impatience and potent vulnerability of obsessive compulsive songwriter Sian Alex, North London outfit Gold Baby serve an own brand concoction of confessional indie pop.

Armed with a band name and a handful of songs, Siân moved to London from her hometown Nottingham in 2018 and set about finding musicians who would help tell her short stories.  Packaging cryptic lyricism and delicately fractured guitar parts with surges of power pop and feedback, Gold Baby consists of Siân, Sara and Scott, a small family bonded by a tenacious commitment to the Gold Baby vision.

Gold Baby had a fast paced start to 2020 with the release of the singles Dogbone and Japanese Racehorse but then plans to record their debut EP were indefinitely postponed, when the day before they were due to go into the studio, Boris Johnson announced that the UK was entering lockdown.

The band created their latest single Versailles during lockdown, and this was released on Friday 30 October.

Versailles is a melancholy tale of a breakdown in a relationship where there was once a strong bond, this is echoed in the heartfelt words “an empire of memories, the future looks bleak, there’s barbed wire between us whenever we speak, we used to talk the stars out of the sky and now I'm nervous about a few hours passing by”.

The track is driven by a magical guitar melody which penetrates the ears and grabs your attention, this goes hand in hand with Sian’s gorgeous vocal, heartfelt and full of emotion.

Although the subject of the song is a relationship breakdown it’s not all doom and gloom as the track ends with a faint hope of optimism with the final verse when Sian sings “we can leave it open, wait to be found, the fire in our apartment could come back around, it feels like a bruise, I didn't mean to change but I'm trying and I don't know what to say”.

That final verse full of metaphors suggests it’s not completely over, ie the fire could perhaps be relit and like a bruise it may heal !

Versailles is a powerfully charged melancholic track, laced with picturesque lyrics and an underlying guitar melody that plays with your emotions.

Gold Baby are yet another recent discovery for me and I can’t wait to hear more from them. Their debut EP is now scheduled for release in the early months of 2021, and the band are working on material for their first album so plenty to look forward to from the dream pop trio.
