Project213 - Naughty Jenny
This single Naughty Jenny by American band Project213, pronounced Project Two Thirteen has been out for a little while but I was intrigued by the message I received from the bands creator Jared Hallock.
For background outside of Project213 Hallock is a composer for dance, film and internet series shows, incidentally Naughty Jenny is named after the lead character in the internet series Vagina Town, for which Hallock had composed the score.
Project213 was started was started in 2005 and is named after Jared’s college music room number, where he and his friends used to hang out. It was initially a studio project with a rotating cast of musicians, however, it’s now a more solid line-up with the release of Naughty Jenny.
Project213 are an Idaho based indie punk/rock band, they play songs with huge guitar riffs and have lyrics with with darker undertones, often crossing genres between rock and punk to give them different dimensions to their songwriting.
Naughty Jenny is a song about a performers desire for Jenny, it’s guitar driven from the start with the occasional synth helping create a song with an eerie undertone. Lyrically, it is fantastic, I particular loved the words “Naughty Jenny would be a fun secret to keep, I keep my secrets with my candy underneath my sheets, that crooked smile makes my head spin around and twirl, those jaded eyes makes me want to swim inside her world”.
The song is accompanied by a fantastic video (attached below) echoing the sentiments of the song, it shows the band performing on stage with Jenny working as a waitress, going about her business, wiping down tables etc, whereas Hallock sings about his desire for her. The video shows him standing outside, as Jenny pauses to seduce him and ends with him running off stage and outside to find her to discover she is not there.
It raises the question did any of this really happen or was it all in the imagination of the performer ? You decide !!!
This is a cracking tune, some great instrumentation, with a dark story and an engaging video to complement, storytelling imagery and songwriting at its very best.
