The Tonalities - Chances

The Tonalities are a five piece alt indie rock band hailing from Sunderland, they are Matty Vest (bass), Brandon Stewart (lead guitar), Brandon Cummings (drums), Charlie Thomson (vocals) and Cameron Edwards (guitar).

They were formed in early 2019, and after going through a couple of changes in line up, they perfected their sound in the first half of the year before taking themselves out on the road playing shows across the North East, including a slot at Sounds of Sunderland Festival and their own headline show in November.

Starting 2020, they were named as a ‘must see act’ by Independent (Sunderland’s staple music venue) and they announced they would be releasing their debut single Chances later in the year.

The track had been developed over the months of playing it live so it was a completely different beast from its first concept when they took it to the studio to record. It was recorded at local Hartlepool studio Wood Cottage Collective.

Chances was released on 8 April 2020 and before I give my view on it hear is what lyricist/vocalist Charlie had to say:

The song is very much a does what it says on the tin or in this case does what the title suggests following the ideas of taking chances and risks throughout life

She then explains the specific nature in which the lyrics were wrote:

Splitting two peoples opinions, the main body of the track focuses on contradicting the initial statement made in the first line “taking chances has gotten me nowhere”

There is no time to settle down for this song, it kicks off with heavy bass and drums and an in your face guitar hook from Brandon Stewart that drives the song throughout. It’s barely started and I’m already foot stomping and head nodding this is going to be a fucking banger when it’s played live !

We then get Charlie Thomson and her vocal, bloody hell this girl can sing and her voice is a fantastic complement to the melodies that the song brings.

And then I listen to the lyrics, god it could be written for me, it’s tells a story of not being too harsh on yourself, take chances but don’t beat yourself up about them, as illustrated in the words “so make the most of bad decisions, dare to dream and aim to do, life is full of broken promises, so don’t break yourself down too…”.

a laid back vibe for a world that is at present anything but……

Just when the song sounds like it is going to come to a natural finish there is an almighty guitar solo which when played live will bring that mosh pit back to fucking life before the crowd get the chance to sing the final chorus back to the band.

Chances is a huge foot stomping debut single, if The Tonalities are not on your playlist, get them added now, NOW !!!!
