First Frontier - Take Cover — AliveandGigging

First Frontier are a neo-garage, post-punk, alternative rock duo now based in South London. They are Helena Poole (drums) and Paul Stafford (guitar) with both sharing the vocal duties.

They met in 2016 when the status quo of the UK was upended and found solace and normality in one another although it wasn’t until 2019 that this started to manifest itself musically and First Frontier was born.

The lockdown allowed them time to write songs and build foundations and hone their undoubted skills seeing them release their first single Take Cover on Friday 18 September.

When asked about the track the band said:

Take Cover is about avoiding burnout from the whirlwind of bad news and vitriol that can appear to be everywhere when you mainline 24 hour news feeds, social media and online forums (Brexit, COVID-19 and everything else). It’s about being present and thankful for the things and people that you can see and touch and interact with in meaningful ways.

Take Cover opens with a chunky guitar riff that sets the melody of the track, the drums float between a hard rock and club rhythm, giving this rocky track a heavy dance beat, it’s really engaging.

Paul takes the lead on the vocals with Helena adding a fabulous harmony throughout. The chorus gives us a bit a singalong opportunity with the words “take cover, take cover, get underneath the covers with your lover, take cover, take cover, just worry ‘bout the here and now”.

The use of lyrics reflects the songs meaning about trying to focus on the here and now, I particularly liked the verse “worry’s a disease that we all suffer, anxiety’s a spectral holy cow, trampling our peace of mind, there’s no buffer
just think about the here and now” which sums this up perfectly.

Take Cover is a great debut track from First Frontier, it’s catchy, has a great upbeat energy and grabs your attention, it’s a song that they can build on with future releases and really looking forward to hearing a lot more from a very promising duo.
