Alex Maxwell - Inaction — AliveandGigging

How to describe Alan Maxwell as an artist ??? I guess the best description is that it’s an indie-folk-rock project by Dumfries singer/songwriter the aforementioned Alex Maxwell, with the music being realised through solo, duo and five piece band performances.

2017 saw Alex championed as a BBC Introducing Artist and Scotsman/Scotland on Sunday ‘Artist to Watch’.

Further positive responses from Rave Child, BBC Radio Scotland and Amazing Radio followed five summer festival appearances.

The first single The Want Comes in Waves had repeated airplay on BBC Radio 6 Music through BBC Introducing and BBC Radio Scotland. Alex was featured as a Fresh Fave on Tom Robinson’s ‘Fresh On The Net’. Showcase performances at the BBC stage, Edinburgh Fringe and Dumfries Music Conference preceded this.

The next single Soul Divine was recorded with the Tinderbox String Quartet and was Single of the Week on Janice Forsyth’s BBC Radio Scotland show.

So Inaction the third single and the first as a full band was released on 15 September 2020.

Joining Alex on the track are Liam Russell (bass), Morgan McConnell (drums) and Lissa Robertson (violin/backing vocals).

It’s a bit of a departure from previous singles and the full band production gives it a more upbeat melody and the instrumental hooks will certainly capture people’s attention as will the very catchy lyrics particularly with the chorus “you cast that spell on me, now I just daydream”.

I also love the very descriptive lines “it’s like someone shone a flashlight into a foggy midnight, I was a shadow in the dark now I'm drifting back”.

It is easy to see why there are comparisons to bands such as Frightened Rabbit and Fatherson but Alex’s songwriting will create its own space in the Scottish Music scene, particularly with tracks like Inaction and I look forward to hearing future releases.
