narcissus - lost causes

narcissus are a three piece Mancunian electronica outfit, they are Ben Guy (vocals/guitar), Lee Mulvey (guitar/bass) and Chris James (drums/percussion).

narcissus were a band tipped for huge success in the mid noughties but a dispute over publishing rights led to a band break up and it looked like that was the end of the road. But they rose like a phoenix from the flames in 2019 and released a double AA side Burning Candles/Flashing Blue Lights on the newly formed 42s record label.

They followed this up in 2020 with Our City which was a track written in conjunction with Manchester spoken word artist Dave Viney, this was a track written for a charity album Manc Made /// Acts of Hope which was curated by Ben Guy.

This brings us to lost causes which is the long awaited new single from the band and was released yesterday, Saturday 12 September. It was co-produced with A Certain Ratio legend Donald Johnson, who also contributes percussion & backing vocals.

lost causes is an absolute monster of a track, it has a majestic melody which immediately has you toe tapping along, fighting against your shoulders from rolling, but it’s a fight you won’t win, it’s a song which will have you bopping along.

The change up in the track when the drums come to the fore really just give this track a new level, it’s one of the reasons why this will be played again and again.

The lyrics are catchy particularly the ear worm lines of “forever chasing lost causes like runaway horses” and “I’m going to wash my hands, wash my hands of this…..say it like it never happened”.

narcissus are a band who offer something a bit different to the Manchester music scene, they are not afraid to challenge themselves and constantly deliver outstanding music, another band that need to be followed.
