Say Hello To Cherry Bleach
Who are Cherry Bleach
Cherry Bleach consist of Alisha Wilkie (Rhythm guitar and vocals), Ewan Watson (Bass guitar), Thomas Reid (Lead guitar) and Ally Moggach (Drums).
The band first became a thing when Ewan asked Alisha in the library at school if she wanted to be in a band. From there the two of them played small acoustic gigs as a duo until they found Thomas and Ally. We all became much closer when we started practising together at Captain Toms and it became clear we all worked really well together.
Where are you from
The band are scattered out across Aberdeenshire, but we always practise in Aberdeen and the majority of our gigs are in the city. Although there were plans to branch out to other cities over the summer before coronavirus broke out.
What music genre are you
As each member has a different music taste, we have tried to incorporate them all to create an original sound. Everyone's separate parts in our songs represent their own style which blends all of our creative minds and ideas together as one. Although, if we had to choose a genre to put ourselves under it would be Alternative Rock.
For fans of
As all of us have different music tastes, our music can be associated with the sounds of Nirvana, Wolf Alice, The Cranberries, Hendrix, Hole and with the drumming style of Neil Peart. More recently, the band have been taking influence from bands such as King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and Thee Oh Sees, so in the future our music may apply to fans of modern psychedelia as well as the list above.
What music have you released so far
So far as a band, we have released our debut EP Bees in My Bones which we put out in January following the two singles H.M.S and Alabama which were released in late 2019. More recently we released a remix of our single Alabama made by Athol Ouwendijk on our bandcamp, any money made from this release is being donated to Cancer Research.
oh! and My Thoughts
Cherry Bleach releases their debut EP Bees in My Bones in January and I have been giving it a bit of play to help me write this article and absolutely love it.
The opening track is Fuck Sake! and gives us a raucous introduction to the band, it starts off with a huge fuzzy bass and a real release of energy giving it a punk vibe. And although it is loud and bold the vocals cut through the track perfectly. Lyrically it sounds to me as if it’s about a slightly unhinged person using the repeated line “how can you think straight when you’re twisted and deranged” towards the end of the song.
This is followed by H.M.S which was the bands debut single, it has a very strong bass line, and a fantastic melody, it is a bit more mellow than the opening track and allows the guitars to shine with a cracking guitar solo. I didn’t really get any real meaning in the lyrics with this one but that’s not a bad thing it’s a song the more you hear it the more you will try to put your own meaning to it.
Blossom is the next track and has a real catchy as fuck melody, which is played with a great rhythm, it’s a head bobbing beauty. Vocally again it’s very strong and lyrically it’s uses the often repeated “come on down and run with me i’ll take you to the blossom tree“ which for me is signalling a brighter future perfect for current times.
We then have Don’t You Feel which sounds a bit darker, more grungy with its distinct bass and dominant snare drum, underpinned by a great guitar hook which kinda slaps you in the face !! I loved the lines “every time I see your face its in different shapes floating around the room, every time I walk in a straight line, I find myself walking on a winding road” describing to me that life is full of changing situations that need to be tackled.
The final track is Alabama and it’s again got a more punky feel to it, probably driven by the fantastic drums, but is also has a great hook, it’s another one that grabs you by the collar and makes you sit up and pay attention. I read that this song is about the Alabama Abortion Act so it wants to send out a strong message that woman should be able to decide what they want to do with their body. The line ‘how many times do we have to go crazy for people to realise that we are no lazy’ is a great line and one of my favourites from the EP.
What can I say Bees in My Bones is a brilliant debut EP, it has five different tracks which when put together give you an excellent understanding of a very talented band. They are clearly comfortable putting together some fantastic melodies and hooks showcasing their skills and throughout it has an outstanding vocal which adapts easily to the different songs and is delivered with great harmony and intensity.
I genuinely can’t wait for the return of live gigs, Cherry Bleach are at the top of my must see bands when some form of normality returns.
