Cliche Cult - Someone Like You

Cliche Cult are the recently formed four piece from Leeds, they are Jimmy Sweeney (vocals/guitar), Robin Green (drums), Jake Clayton (guitar) and Jimmy Ingham (bass).

They formed in June 2020, when lockdown had just been lifted, with each member coming to the project with varied experiences and musical backgrounds.

They draw influence from The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Talking Heads and Echo and the Bunnymen amongst others.

Cliche Cult released their debut single Common Ground in November and have now followed this up with Someone Like You which came out on 21 January.

It was recorded at Beat Street studios in November 2020 by Darius Kiani and Tim Drucker.

With a booming bass intro and some sharp drums Someone Like You has you hooked right from the off and then we get the fuzzy guitars kicking in, giving the track some depth and fantastic layers of sound.

The track has a strong lead vocal and the backing vocals give Someone Like You a joyful vibe as it delivers some great lyrics, I particularly enjoyed the opening verse when Sweeney sings “there’s that shallow feeling hovering over like a cloud, ready to open up like you opened up our hearts, the harder it is we cling to a dream we try to believe”.

This is backed up by an anthemic chorus that will have you singing along.

Someone Like You has a nostalgic feeling, with some strong Joy Division influences shining through the track, but delivered in a style that is distinctly contemporary.

It was my first introduction to Cliche Cult and they are definitely a band to be watched, big tunes, big production and a big future !
