Amie Jay - Long Gone

London based Amy Johnson, who records as Amie Jay is an alternative folk/pop artist, whose music is emotional, honest and packed with authentic experience.

From the age of five Amy was inspired by lyricism and poetry and began songwriting. Once she gained a guitar, she began combining these melodies with musical ideas. A singer and a dancer, Amy studied both subjects at Kingston University and stuck around to pursue her passion for storytelling.

She has recently taken the step from acoustic work to create a fully-fledged concept EP which combines acoustic tracks with electronic and even hip-hop elements. That upcoming EP tells the story of a relationship breakdown in five songs, from the initial promise of a new beau to the separation and eventual acceptance.

The EP’s first single Ricochet (featuring Ryan Stavrou) was released on 21 February and was a truly emotional song, describing a breakup in a very stripped back song with some heartfelt lyrics.

And now we have the second single Long Gone which was released today Friday 24 April 2020.

This is a beautiful if very sobering and heartbreaking folk pop track, it starts of with a very gently plucked guitar, which really sets the tone of the song, before Amie Jay’s gorgeous vocal kicks in, she has an amazing voice.

The lyrics are very sombre, softly describing the emotions of a relationship breakdown. There are a couple of really poignant lines that really hit home to anyone who has gone through this particularly “who knew time could be so cruel, who knew charm could be so insecure” and “maybe I could be enough, be your diamond in the rough, this level headed chaos is a minefield”. The layered vocals on the track really add to the atmosphere of the song and give it even more emotional depth.

The final verse of the song “boy meets girl and then he disappears, times like this I wish you would have thought, maybe I wish you were so much more, maybe I wish you were so much more” as the track gently fades out is a perfect description of disappointment and perhaps missed opportunity of what may have been.

This is an absolutely fantastic track, it is instrumentation at its stripped back best which helps makes this song so emotional, that combined with Amie Jay’s vocal make Long Gone a song that won’t be forgotten and is a complete contradiction of its title, as this song will be on my playlists for years to come.
