Post Coal Prom Queen ft. Macaroom - Zou

Post Coal Prom Queen and macaroom have joined forces once more for the distinctive alt-pop single Zou. Following the success of their springlike collaboration Body of Water.

Post Coal Prom Queen are Lily Higham and Gordon Johnstone, the songwriting duo behind the band L-space and their three critically acclaimed albums, Kipple Arcadia (2018), Music for Megastructures (2019), and Feed The Engines! (2020). Their songs have been heard on BBC Radio 1, 6Music, and BBC Radio Scotland and have garnered international acclaim.

Macaroom are a Japanese electro-pop band founded by vocalist Emaru and composer Asahi. They’ve released three acclaimed albums, room 103 (2010), homophone TE (2016), and swimming classroom (2018) - and several EPs, including a pop recomposing of John Cage’s work. Asahi, also known as Gaku Kiishi, is the author of the best-selling book Decomposition - an easy way to compose contemporary music.

The two bands discovered each other when Gordon and Lily heard macaroom on a Spotify playlist. They reached out to ask if they could remix some macaroom songs, but after chatting PCPQ were invited to join macaroom's label - Kiishi Bros. Entertainment, which the band happily accepted.

Zou (which interestingly is the Japanese word for elephant) is released today, Tuesday 15 September and is another inspired collaboration between the two parties.

The melody of the track is just delightful, it’s full of floaty synth arrangements that take the mind to another plane.

It is underpinned by a much darker heavier bass sound and some gorgeous chimes that if you close your eyes and use your imagine you could really get the impression that you are floating off on a cloud.

Last time around with Body of Water Emaru gave us rap vocals in her native language but not on Zou as Emaru and Lily give us some dreamy ethereal vocals that complement the instrumentation beautifully.

Once again the innovation of Zou is fabulous and I love that Post Coal Prom Queen are passionate about giving non English langue voices a platform in their music, please give this collaboration a listen and some well deserved love.
