Late Fees - Silent Siren
Formed in 2019 behind the service counter of a Glasgow cafe, Late Fees are three friends, Andrew Gordon (guitar/vocals), Michael Hamilton (bass/vocals) and Jack Mackenzie (drums/vocals).
Late Fees take inspiration from Scottish staples like Teenage Fanclub and Camera Obscura as well as modern indie acts like Car Seat Headrest and Jay Som.
They released their debut single I Bet last month and now follow this up with Silent Siren which was released on Friday 13 November.
The band recorded it themselves in their seperate homes, with bass player Michael Hamilton producing and Ross Cairns mastering.
When asked about Silent Siren the band said:
It's about saying embarrassing things, cringing at yourself and trying to learn when to shut up.
Silent Siren is a change of pace with its stripped back acoustic feel, a gently played guitar and soft drums create a very nostalgic melody creating the picture that the song is reflecting on memories of the past.
The melody itself is very catchy and grabs your attention and the vocal is delivered with confidence to match the charming lyrics, I love the verse “sat side by side, either side of a canyon, I held my breath as the wind picked up, but if a hurricane blows I'll still hear those hushed tones, your feathery elocution it keeps me afloat and I think I'm falling, I'm falling, watch me fall”.
Silent Siren also delivers an ear worm of a chorus that you can’t help but sing along to when they sing “whisper it to me your voice a silent siren, I'm here I'm listening with my all with every bone, whisper it to me your voice a silent siren, I'm here I'm listening the world around us is gone”.
Once again Late Fees have delivered a brilliant piece of indie pop, a catchy melody, great vocals and engaging lyrics, they definitely know their way around writing a tuuuuune !
Two tracks into their career and they are already a band that I’m hooked on, I can’t wait to hear more from them.
