Skylights - Enemies

York based anthemic rock’n’rollers Skylights are the latest signings to Manchester’s hottest indie label, 42’s Records. They are Rob Scarisbrick (vocals), Turnbull Smith (guitar), Jonny Scarisbrick (bass) and Myles Soley (drums).

They are building a palpable buzz across the UK. Through live gigs and an interview and live performance on SOCCER AM earlier this year they are very quickly building a strong and passionate following and a reputation as a ‘band of the people’.

They release their debut physical single Enemies today, Friday 12 June, the CD single also contains three additional tracks, Nothing Left To Say, Britannia and What You Are.

I’m going to focus my attention on lead track Enemies, and it’s an absolute banger.

It’s an infectious track from the opening riffs to the drum driven melody, it has a distinct Indie rock feel tinged with a Brit pop penchant for killer hooks and works well with Scarisbrick’s earthy vocals.

Enemies is going to have you head bobbing or foot stomping, whilst it may be one or the other, there is no danger of it being neither because the track certainly does grab your attention.

Lyrically, it’s tongue in cheek, the opening verse was really good when they sang “Shotgun blast in the Autumn fall smashing it down like a Berlin Wall,
sink or swim but I don't know mean those streets don't pass and go, just one look in a devils eye two faced smirk from a Gemini, Just one thing you've got to know Enemies - it's called rock’n’roll.

The chorus sums up the tracks story of about trying to achieve your hopes as it says “breaking outta school cos we were high, kicking down doors, screaming why oh why, Enemies they've got to know, dream those dreams don't let 'em go, breaking outta school cos were high, kicking down doors just you and I, Enemies they've got to know, dream those dreams don't let 'em go

I have heard so much about Skylights but haven’t given them too much attention but that has changed after hearing this track, these lads are going places and with the strength of Enemies, they may just be the next big indie band that we have been waiting for.
