Ivy Black were formed in late 2017 and are an Edinburgh four piece alternative indie rock band comprising of Laura Letford (vocals), Blair Allison (guitar), Connor Featherstonehaugh (bass) and Josh Marsh (drums).

Their formative years were spent playing gigs and various events across Scotland in an array of venues honing their craft.

They released their impressive debut single Cameras in May 2020 and are now following this up with their sophomore effort No Holds Barred which dropped on Friday 12 February.

Commenting on the track Laura said:

the track is about when somebody pushes you to your breaking point and you decide enough is enough, you are not going to take it, you stand your ground and you’re gonna bite back

No Holds Barred hits us hard with some dynamic drums before the impressive guitar riff picks up the track and sets us off on an engaging and energetic journey.

This song despite the dark subject matter sees Ivy Black present a more upbeat sound compared to Cameras, the guitars are more jangly and poppy and shows diversity in the music they can offer.

Lyrically it’s sharp and powerful especially when Laura sings “I’ve never met someone who’s made life so hard, I’m coming for ya, I’m coming for ya, no holds barred”.

No Holds Barred is another fantastic track from Ivy Black, they are certainly a band that know how to craft a song, I’m looking forward to hearing more from them this year and are on my must sees once gigs resume.

if you don’t know Ivy Black, it’s time to discover them and enjoy the ride, they are destined to make an impression on the Scottish music scene without any shadow of a doubt.
