Hadda Be - Another Life
Pitched between infectiously melancholic indie-pop and angular, post-punk inflected stomps, Hadda Be is Amber, Ben, Matthew and Oliver.
The band was formed under the name Foundlings in 2018, spread across joint hometowns of South London and Brighton. Their first two singles, Misery and Horizon, received generous airplay on BBC 6 Music and Radio X.
The following year saw the release of the band’s debut, eponymously titled EP via their new record label, Last Night From Glasgow.
In 2020, with the departure of the band’s original bass player, a new member, a recent introduction to parenthood, a debut album in the works, brexit induced political turmoil, coronavirus and a US trademark dispute to boot, the newly replenished four-piece made the change to Hadda Be. Taken from Allen Ginsberg’s poem Hadda Be Playing on the Radio, the new name reflects a fresh outlook for the band.
The aptly titled Another Life, the band’s forthcoming debut album, was recorded in five days at Brighton Road Studios and the lead single of the same name was released on Friday 5 February.
Another Life is a track that explodes from the start with its clashing drums and fast paced guitars, there is a real grungy punk feel to their debut song under the Hadda Be moniker.
The track is full of energy and excitement, this is a song that needs to be played live, sweaty mosh pits will love this one.
Another Life is a union of melancholic lyrics and an upbeat jangly guitar melody, with pace changes and pause designed to add layers to the track.
I love the lyrics to Another Life particularly the verse “When I find a lost child I’ll speak to him as if I already I know, I won’t fight, I’ll retire, I try to act so tough but I’m full of fright”.
Hadda Be’s debut album is due out in early April and if Another Life is an idea of what to expect then it’s going to be huge.
That change of name might be all it takes to launch the careers of this very talented quartet, certainly one to be watched with their raw energy and explosive sounds.
