Salt River Shakedown - Sign of the Times

Salt River Shakedown have been performing across the Scottish gig circuit for the past three years with their raw and fuzzalicious blues rock. 2019 saw them begin to get serious recognition playing alongside the likes of The Lazy’s, Crobot and Anchor Lane.

The band released their first single Sunbird last April which was taken from their EP Road to the Sacred Island, a follow up to their previous release Your Wings To Fly. Following this and their first UK tour the band felt a change of direction was required and brought in a new vocalist so the line up is Alek McMillan (guitar), Shaun Kilna (bass), Jake Mackie-Duncan (drums) and Griff (vocals).

This change looks to be paying off with the band receiving glowing reviews. They most recently supported Jared James Nichols to a sold out Garage in Glasgow.

Their latest single Sign of the Times (an apt title for today’s world) is released today, Friday 1 May 2020.

It’s a rock n roll blues song without a doubt, guitar riffs, bass and drums set the rhythm, there is a real smokiness to Griff’s vocal which is in harmony with the melody. About a minute or so from the end their is a fantastic guitar solo showcasing the musicianship of the band.

The opening lines probably describe how a lot of people will be feeling now when they state “we got no money and we hate that feeling and all that we can do is keep on dreaming, we all are powerless believe it or not so come take a deep breath and keep moving ooonnn”, a sign of the times indeed.

It’s a good tune, it’s a band I wasn’t overly familiar with, but will take a listen to their back catalogue to get up to speed.
