Sunstinger - The Void
Sunstinger are a four piece alternative/noise rock band from Fife consisting of Taylor Wright (vocals/guitar), Scott Gourlay (guitar), Bill Anderson (bass) and Adam Gregory (drums).
Consistin of ex Sergeant, Armory and Foreignfox members, Sunstinger aren’t lacking in any sort of experience, from playing T in the Park with previous bands and touring up and down the UK for the last few years.
They have already established themselves with their past five singles and music videos, which have been held in the highest regard by the likes of Triple-J, BBC Radio and their devoted 2000 monthly listeners.
Rory Cowieson of rising psych-wizards (and fellow Fifers) Domiciles is responsible for Sunstinger’s artwork and videos, which channel both gothic and retro horror with sublime results
Sonically, while the four piece pay homage to cult favourites The Jesus & Mary Chain amongst others, they unquestionably bring something new to the table, thanks to their relentless experimentation.
Wright explains:
We’re constantly selling, swapping and buying gear to try and find new sounds, utilising vintage and contemporary equipment, the band are learning all the time, though two parts of their process are set in stone, recording with Magnus Collie (we are all on the same wavelength) and rehearsing in Tin Pan Alley, known to most as The Rat Pit. I used to rehearse there when I was sixteen. It was an abandoned building full of rats
And despite the complications that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought the world, Sunstinger are looking to come out of this stronger than ever, with the release of their sixth single The Void, recorded by Magnus Collie (The Skids, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Big Country) which is released today, Friday 1 May 2020.
Lead singer Taylor Wright describes the song as:
an interesting one to record. The chorus was originally a part we didn't use in another track. I worked on it and made it into a new song. My mate was going through a bit of a hard time and with his permission I wrote the song about the way I seen things, the way things were happening in his life. It's like a story it has a beginning, middle and end, and the break is about a funeral. We added the main riff last minute as it didn't originally have one, the cool thing about the riff as its played on a Fender IV bass. That's why it has this weird tone. I think it actually sounds like anxiety. Like the theme tune to casualty or something haha that's what we were aiming for. We used the Fender IV a lot in that session, a great idea by Magnus Collie.
The Void is released today, Friday 1 May, it’s a bloody good bit of alt rock, driving fuzzy guitar riff, hard to imagine the song without it really, as it is the force behind the track, as the fuzz fades out Wright’s outstanding rock vocal kicks in, perfect for the melody we are engaged with and then we have, which is always good in my view, a nice easy shout along catchy chorus “the void is calling my name, the void is calling my name, the void is calling my name, the void is calling my name”. Easy Peasy…this will have crowds belting their words back at them as they are bouncing around.
The instrumentation is top notch each section of the track is delivered perfectly and the production is fantastic, this is just a bloody good rock track, no argument about it.
I also reviewed previous single Shimmer, and The Void is a great complement to that, this is a band I really can’t wait to see live once normal life returns, whenever that may be !!!
