Kohla - Flux EP
I am little behind the curve on this one as it was released on 20 February, but after attending the female songwriter showcase event at Assai Records in Dundee I reached out to all the girls to offer to review any forthcoming music and this review is a result of my admiration for the project they were involved in.
Before I tell you about the Flux EP, let me give you some background on Rachel Alice Johnson aka Kohla as it gives some insight into her creative process.
Rachel incorporates dance into her live set so her music is written in mind of the whole visual performance. In addition she is also a graduate of the Edinburgh College of Art and created the artwork for Flux herself (it’s a self portrait in oil).
Kohla cites her musical influences as Grimes, Moby, Kate Bush and FKA Twigs and since the release of her debut single S/he back in 2018 there has been critical acclaim from BBC radio and numerous online and written music press articles.
Flux is a 4 track EP and was released on crowd funded label Last Night from Glasgow and kicks off with T O U C H, which is laid back dance track, with a fantastic falsetto. It is a smooth song perfect for chilling with and is a great introduction to her alternative R&B style.
_Gorgeous is next up and has a down tempo beat, featuring some grandiose strings and is the perfect vehicle for Kohla’s sultry vehicle. Pxrxdise is a slower track, featuring layered harmonies and some overlaid vocals and gas a more melancholy feel to it.
The final track S/he has been around for a bit, but is the perfect ending to the EP, with its darker feel, piano melody and sensual lyrics.
Overall this is a fantastic set of songs, showcasing Kohla’s fantastic voice and presenting a very chilled R&B perfect for early mornings or late nights. Kohla is definitely on my radar and look forward to future music and the opportunity to catch her live show.
