Club Beirut - The One That Hurts
Club Beirut are a Scottish pop band originating from Edinburgh, consisting of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Craig McInnes, lead guitarist Fraser Laing, bassist Ryan Livingstone and drummer Jordan Linton.
Craig grew up in the small village of Leuchars, home of the main Scottish Royal Air Force Base. He works for the RAF based further north in Elgin. The band formed late 2019 when Craig started creating several demos in his bedroom and putting them out on social media, teasing his friends with catchy guitar hooks and poppy vocals. At this point Fraser felt the need to get in contact with Craig. Fraser swapped sticks for strings and they then brought their debut single Something New to producer, Bruce Rintoul.
The release of the first single brought massive traction on all platforms including receiving radio play from BBC Introducing and being played on Japans national radio station with Mike Rogers. The duo became a full four piece band by injecting Ryan and Jordan into the formation. Fraser had previously been in a band with Ryan and Jordan is a life-long friend with Fraser. All four talents came together to create their second single The One That Hurts.
Having already developed a taste for the music industry with previous bands, supporting the likes of Catfish and the Bottlemen, We Are Scientists, Fatherson, Pigeon Detectives and Lewis Capaldi at his first ever gig (!), the union of Club Beirut looks to build upon these successes and bring their take of pop euphoria to an even wider audience.
The four piece currently reside in the UK but have big aspirations to establish themselves into UK, Europe, US and Asian music market, well basically the world !!!
The One That Hurts is released today, Friday 1 May 2020 and after having reviewed their debut single Something New, I was really looking forward to hearing the new track and it doesn’t disappoint, excuse the language but Fuck Me these lads know how to write a pop banger.
It’s another great tune, huge hooks that pull you into the track, they deliver killer upbeat melodies, which gives a joyous bounce and instantly has you moving your body to beat, shapes being thrown and head bobbing to the fantastic grooves.
Again the boys deliver feel good music with less feel good lyrics, the song sounds to me about a struggle with a relationship when it appears to the outside world that it is perfect, the first hint of that is in the lines “if you’re so happy then what you crying for, I told you not to come here, you are going to start a war” and the catchy chorus “so I don’t want to be the one that hurts and you can never take that away from me, cos everybody thinks the world of you, but they can’t see the lies, the lies”.
This is a real piece of joyous pop and is another dance floor filler, if this standard of songwriting continues then that lofty ambition of taking over the world is a distinct possibility.
