The New Consistent - Turn Off All The Screens

The New Consistent is the pseudonym of Worcester based 20 year old Ben Ramsay.

Ben cites a whole array of influences in his music when he tells us:

I’m inspired by the lyrics of Loyle Carner, Alex Turner and Dave, and the music of Rejjie Snow, Jorja Smith, Slowthai and Murkage Dave.

But I also love watching interviews with people like Ocean Wisdom, Benjamin Zephaniah, AJ Tracey, Jaykae, I could go on forever here. It's because of the way they handle themselves and talk about their success. Work ethic, that's a big one, and then just their lifestyles like looking after yourself mentally and physically and being the best you can be. It's so inspiring.

With his last release Rude Boys coming at the end of July 2019, there has been a good length of time since The New Consistent released any new music. Put in his own words ‘TNC’ explains the reasoning for that:

I wanted to take a step back, learn my craft and really write music that I was 100% proud to be releasing, something that represented me completely. With this single, and EP, I think I've found exactly that, I am so proud of this song and cant wait for everyone to hear it. I've got some huge plans.

The latest single Turn Off All The Screens was released on Friday 2 October and is written and produced solely by himself this time round, with friend and fellow musician Charlotte Lennon featuring vocals on the chorus.

Turn Off All The Screens kicks off with some melancholic synths before the drum machine kicks in to give it a catchy rhythm complementing the spoken word verses and the harmonies of the duet chorus with Charlotte Lennon.

The sharp wit of Ben’s lyrics come to the fore in the opening verse when he compares life to a video game with the words “in a video game when you see a bad guy, you know youve gone the right way, but now I've been questioning night time, cos theres more light there than in my days, I’ll spend hours on end coming up with remedies, to solve the problems within my head
maybe its not something physical I need, I’ll rewrite the path that I tread
”.

But it’s the catchy chorus alongside Charlotte Lennon that will stick in your head and have you pondering the message when they sing “wait a minute I’d like to cash out please, my bets gone to shit, I’ve reached my peak the pressures got too much, I’d like to leave the shops got to shut, turn off all the screens”.

Turn Off All The Screens is a track that takes a downcast look at today’s fast paced lifestyles and leaves you reflecting on the track’s messages long after it finishes, the sharp wit of the lyrics and the magical melancholic melody will be tugging at your heart.
