T-A - 001
T-A are the Fife based post punk duo of Sean Sneddon and Ben Curling, who got together when their previous projects ended.
The 001 EP which came out last Friday, 7;August, is their debut release and it was recorded with Magnus Collie at the fairly iconic Substation Studios in Rosyth.
The first track Far Away is the lead single and is a wonderful start to the EP with it’s luscious fuzziness and banging drum beat which create a hypnotic melody which certainly engages the ears.
The lyrics are tongue in cheek about a feeling of being in the background to what’s going on in front of them, I liked the verse “isn’t it fun to say people are oh so strange, they’ll talk and laugh so loud without making a sound, you seem so far away, you seem so far away”.
Far Away will get you dancing along with that ear worm of a melody.
Next up is the eponymous T-A and this has a more brooding darker undertone epitomised by the opening lines “original sin I’m going to shed my skin……… original sin I’m going to shed my skin” but then throws in the pleasant surprise of a real dark bluesy melody when the harmonica kicks in part way through the track.
Mourning is the penultimate track and is a slower song with a haunting guitar based melody, it tells of the struggles of trust and what to believe as highlighted by my favourite lines of “be careful of who you trust, the youth of mine will self cut, divine intervention forget what’s real suggest what’s true”.
The final track is Lucid Dreamer and is a great finish to the EP it’s got another ear worm of a melody, psychedelic layers of sound driven by a great guitar riff really grabs you by the collar and gets you nodding from start to finish.
001 is a tremendous debut EP from newcomers T-A and I really can’t wait to see what the future holds for this duo and to see them recreate these tracks in a live environment.
