Gold Baby - Captain Dorego
Dreamy grunge pop fermented with the knotty impatience and potent vulnerability of obsessive compulsive songwriter Sian Alex, North London outfit Gold Baby serve an own brand concoction of confessional indie pop.
Gold Baby consists of Siân, Sara and Scott, a small family bonded by a tenacious commitment to the Gold Baby vision.
They first caught my attention towards the end of last year with their brilliant single Versailles and I immediately checked out their previous releases. I was so impressed that I included them as one of my Hot Tips for 2021.
And their first single of 2021 Captain Dorego which was released on Friday 29 January has done nothing to dampen my enthusiasm.
Captan Dorego is a track that exposes the vulnerability of Sian’s writing, it is always relateable, this time it touches on the feelings of being overwhelmed and engulfed with the trials tribulations of the world.
The song has an acoustic feel to it, gentle guitars and soft drums frame the vulnerability of those dreamy heartfelt vocals which are churning out the stresses of life and the need for calm, captured at one point by a very noticeable sigh.
Lyrically, Sian is an incredibly talented lyricist, using words that draw descriptive pictures for the story being told, I love the verse “can I cut the wood, can I stoke the fire, can I sing in the small church choir, fill it up with gasoline, light a match and wait for you to scream”.
Despite its cries for a less stressed life, particularly poignant in today’s world, Captain Dorego leaves us with hope that it can be attained with the song finishing as Sian sings “I'll be the old man out at sea, still and silent finally, something dreamed up where I'll be, catching fish to set them free” picturing a scene of calm and serenity.
I could listen to Gold Baby on repeat all day, they are a band who really touch me with their simple construction of songs but tearing themselves open with the vulnerability of their writing. They are definitely a band that need to be watched, give them a follow.
Captain Dorego is the lead single for their forthcoming EP Rabbits, which is due to drop on 26 March, give it a stream below:
