Stanley Odd - Night Rip
Stanley Odd are an alternative hip hop bandbased in Scotland, they are Solareye (rap vocals), Veronika Electronika (vocals), Scruff Lee (guitars),
T LO (keys/piano), AdMac (bass) and Samson (drums).
Stanley Odd have played alongside huge names like Arrested Development, De La Soul and Easy Star All-Stars, and are championed up and down the country for their phenomenal live sets. However, although we are unable to dance together right now, the band realised music itself can still bring people together in a way that nothing else can. In light of this, they decided to release a brand new single every six weeks.
The artwork for the ongoing release series will be provided by Edinburgh-based illustrator, Matt Sinclair. Inspired by nature, Matt uses vivid, contrasting colours, and crisp lines, to create art which - like the band - is bold, unrestrained and entirely authentic.
Following on from their last single FUWSH (F**k You We’re Still Here), Night Rip is the second track to be released since government lockdown restrictions began and was released on Friday 14 August.
On being asked about Night Rip the band describes the single:
as a reflection on the dichotomy of chasing the light to something new and destroying what you had; the sunrise spreading across the land; showing a path or direction to travel with new places and opportunities - but also setting fire to home and leaving it to burn.
It’s about the loudness of your thoughts and a head full of stress, filling you up physically ‘til you can’t even speak to articulate them. It’s about restlessness and steeling yourself for the resolve to go. Heads full of racing thoughts that won't stop. Feet that won't stay still.
Night Rip is a melancholic soundtrack to the breakdown of a doomed relationship and the struggles that come with it.
It is a different vibe for Stanley Odd as front man Solareye takes a step back from his rap to over lay the gorgeous vocals of Veronika Elektronika and the story kicks in with the opening lyrics when they sing “I’m leaving with the sunlight, I’m leaving with the first light, I’m leaving with the sunlight, I'm leaving with the first light, come dawn light my shadow won’t be found”.
The track itself is a hauntingly beautiful piece of dark electro pop, with its brooding murky synth, moody drums and bass lines, with the over layered vocals giving it the wonderful perspective of both sides of the relationship breakdown.
Night Rip is a gloriously produced track from Dunt and showcases Stanley Odd’s ability to be innovative with their music, they are one of the most diverse and engaging bands in Scotland just now.
