Sam Thomas - Mr Sunshine

Sam Thomas has been well cemented in the local North East of England music scene for a good few years now, from playing in metal, punk and indie bands, to solo acoustic guitar driven music he has been working hard for years.

Having finally found his niche in the hip-hop world, he describes this current project as:

the most enjoyable to date, I’m proud of the current work and super excited to see what’s to come.

Between working together on tracks and playing on the same live shows Sam Thomas has collaborated with hotly tipped North East artists Kay Greyson, Eyeconic and Jack Fox but he’s now pushing forward to be the name on everybody’s lips.

The new single Mr Sunshine was released today, Friday 25 September and is the first track from future mixtape Progress which is set to be released later this year.

When asked about the track Sam explains:

as soon as I heard that beat, the hook came to mind and it hasn’t changed one bit since then, it just worked, and I stuck with it throughout.

He goes on to discuss the lyrical content of this single:

It’s all about me, but not at all at the same time. It’s a reflection of how our feelings are created, not wanting to create a negative mentality, just pushing that every goal is achievable.

Mr Sunshine starts off with a very dreary lo-fi beat and the opening lyrics of “its cloudy outside, starting out chill” is the polar opposite of the songs title.

The track continues with its downbeat tone and Sam’s downcast lyrics add to the overall feeling especially when he sings “I can tell you got no sympathy I’m probably sure you hate me but I don’t give a shit I don’t need you to save me”.

It’s a song of real frustration, struggling to deal with day to day events and wondering why there is no sunshine in life like he sees in others perfectly captured by the words “mr sunshine, mr sunshine, where’s mine, where’s mine”.

Mr Sunshine is a very emotive and personal song which I’m sure is relatable to many people as they struggle with day to day, it’s heart on the sleeve stuff and shows an artist not frightened to tackle anxiety in his music.

It’s a well crafted track and cements Sam’s reputation as one of the main players in the North East hip hop scene, I’m really excited by what’s to come on that mix tape due out later in the year.

In the meantime give Mr Sunshine a listen and chill to it’s lo-fi melancholic charm.
