Stanley Odd - KILLSWITCH
Stanley Odd are an alternative hip hop bandbased in Scotland, they are Solareye (rap vocals), Veronika Electronika (vocals), Scruff Lee (guitars), T LO (keys/piano), AdMac (bass) and Samson (drums).
Stanley Odd have played alongside huge names like Arrested Development, De La Soul and Easy Star All-Stars, and are championed up and down the country for their phenomenal live sets. However, although we are unable to dance together right now, the band realised music itself can still bring people together in a way that nothing else can.
In light of this, they decided to release a brand new single every six weeks. Following on from Night Rip, KILLSWITCH is the third track to be released from the band since lockdown began and it comes out today Friday 25 September.
After a little change up with the vocals for previous single KILLSWITCH sees a return to Solareye leading the way, it is a song that reflects on the country and the world.
It is an organ led melody with the addition of some very relaxed drumming that gives this song a classic lo-if hip-hop beat that is used to perfection to showcase Solareye’s biting sardonic lyrics.
The track takes a stroll through today’s society pouring scorn as it does as the clever opening lyrics of “Welcome back to savage exchanges, here, can somebody explain please?, Every time a royal is having a baby I feel like I’m living in Gavin and Stacy” testify.
KILLSWITCH offers us a late night summer chill-out vibe with its dark beats but brings us back to life with its singalong chorus of “This is a reverse kill switch. Sound the alarm, this is not a drill kids. Raise the alert, smash the glass, I’m still blitzed. In case of emergency get out your phone and film this”.
With it’s laid back vibes and social commentary KILLSWITCH is a song for the times and showcases the ability of Stanley Odd to write killer tunes but also be politically aware, once again pushing them forward as leaders of the Scottish hip-hop scene.
