Monza Express are a five piece guitar band from Aberdeen, formed in late 2017 the band consists of Fraser Bateman (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Greg Burgess (bass), Kris Fraser (keyboard), Shaun Reid (lead guitar) and David ‘Deco’ Smith (drums).

The band draw influences from a variety of sources depending on which member you speak to but include Bowie, The Beatles, Oasis and Muse amongst others.

Monza Express are back with their latest single Crying on the radio the follow up to the bouncing Sunshine and the whimsical In the City.

It was recorded at Aberdeenshire’s Floortom Studios, produced by Steve Curtis then mixed and mastered by The Dub Cadet and is released today, Friday 10 July.

When asked about the track Kris Fraser said:

One morning I woke up and I just had this idea to write this song from the perspective of this guy who was calling a radio show to try and win back his girlfriend because she dumped him, but it turns out he’d actually been abused by her the whole time and it’s bizarre he wanted her back despite how she treated him, he just couldn’t see it. So that’s pretty much where it came from.

Crying on the radio starts with a slow melody, almost has a 70’s psychedelic rock feel to it, as the guitars are softly plucked before the melancholic vocals kicks in.

We then see a change in pace as we enter the chorus, as a guitar riff is introduced as it picks up speed going into the chorus as Bateman’s anguished vocals sing The very catch “crying on the radio you mean so much to me, it will always be something special, crying on the radio you mean so much to me, it will always be something special“.

As the band said this is a song about trying to win back an ex, even though he may have been suffering abuse and this is highlighted in a verse where the lyrics tell they story “cigarettes I smoked them cos you told me to, the sun went down the handbrakes on, say you’ll be mine forever, forever, what now I’m still in love with every part of you, are you in love with any part of me, well are you, well are youuuuuu!!.

But the anguish is best described in the lines “you broke my heart in two mend it with your glue, love will see us through tell me that you love me” as the song fades to a melancholic ending.

Crying in the rain is a jackpot winner, it’s a song driven by changing melodies, layered guitars, thrusting drums and a vocal that portrayed the torture of the story. It’s a fabulous unveiling of an increase in the confidence of the band and that can only bode well for future releases.
