Weekend Debt - Pomposity
Grant, Calvin, Russell and Harvey make up the innovative indie rock band Weekend Debt from Glasgow.
Growing up around music and progressing Glasgow artists, Weekend Debt have grown their own fan base from scratch and made an impact on the local music scene.
They take influence from The View and Fatherson and infuse some Arctic Monkeys yet add their own original twist on modern indie music.
Their debut EP was released Boyfriend Averse in 2017 and their single Paragon later the same year which welcomed critical acclaim with Spotify and Amazing Radio.
The band are quickly earning a reputation in the local music scene by adding their own unique vibe, creating an energetic live atmosphere that has led the band to sell out 13th Note, Clydesdale Inn and Broadcast among some as well as featuring at a number of gigs with This Feeling and supporting the likes of Kyle Falconer, Spring King and Calva Louise to name but a few.
Having started the year with a packed headline at King Tut's and previous single Legato getting on the Indie List and Hot New Bands Spotify playlists. 2020 was set to be a big year.
Like many other bands this year, Weekend Debt's plans were foiled due to the pandemic, but they’ve been making use of this free by time by continuously writing, recording and improving on an established sound and this led to the release of their latest track Pomposity on Thursday 5 November.
When asked about the track Grant said:
Our latest single, Pomposity, is a song that reflects on past situations and returning to the same relationship that I know I shouldn’t get involved with. Dwelling on these old scenarios can often be a bad thing, but the song tries to look at it in a positive way and poke fun at the feelings I had in that time. It is great to be back in the studio after months away and it is a fresh sound we are pursuing, which has spent time evolving in the covid stricken background.
The first thing that strikes me with Pomposity is the change in sound, they have dropped the slightly grungier edge to previous releases and have released a full on indie pop banger.
It starts straight off with Grant’s strong vocal and a ear worm of a guitar riff, catchy as hell and stays that way throughout. Their new sound certainly plays to some of the aforementioned influences as it has that catchy hook and a driving bass line and leads us into a chorus that is going to be sung loud when played live, very akin to bands like The View.
It’s a song with a relatable topic and there are lots of great throwaway lines to back that up, I particularly liked the lines “cos I’ll never love someone as cool as you and it’s hard to keep quiet when I’m telling the truth”.
There is nothing not to like with Pomposity it is an all out feel good indie pop banger, that has you bouncing around to those glitzy guitar hooks. With tunes like this I fully expect Weekend Debt to boom as soon as bands can get playing again.
