Winter Gardens - Zigzanny

Winter Gardens are a four piece hailing from the South Coast of England, they are Ananda Howard (vocals/synths/percussion), Jamie Windless (guitar/ bass/synths/piano), Matt Squires (bass) and Alex Robinson (drums).

They draw their influences from 80's post-punk, 4AD & Creation era bands, and have developed their own sound combining ethereal, hazy dream-pop with the raw energy of punk.

Since forming in mid 2018, they released their debut single Coral Bells in 2019 and have played numerous live shows across the country alongside such bands as Modern English, Piroshka, Magic Wands & Penelope Isles.

This year sees them release their debut four track EP Tapestry next month, the lead project single the eponymous Tapestry dropped last month and this is followed by the latest single Zigzanny which came out yesterday, Monday 24 August.

Commenting on the new single, the band say:

Zigzanny is simply a fun, energetic 'fairytale' that centres around a very juvenile outlook on love and teenage fantasy.

Jamie Windless commenting on the video says:

I had the idea for the video during lockdown. With limited access for video creativity I set out to find stock footage I could purchase and manipulate. I chose the amateur Dortmund FC Sunday game as I felt the energy and passion of the players captured the energy and pace of the track so perfectly, the track oozes vitality, as does the frenzy and passion of amateur football, putting everything you've physically got into it. The game compliments those younger teenage feelings Zigzanny emits with its simple lyrics.

The track itself lives up to the description of their sound, it has the energy of punk in its guitar melody, but the fuzziness of the other instrumentation gives it a more shoe gaze vibe and those dreamy pop vocals, the three elements combined give Zigzanny a nice buzz.

Lyrically it describes the simplicity of teenage love, I particularly enjoyed the opening verse when Ananda sings “pure delights look so comforting, the skies trapped in your eyes laws abide, the rarity of you and me carries me home, lay awake at night with you subtle highlights bloom”.

and the final line illustrates this to perfection “tell me stories, tell me truths, tales succumb in lieu, watch the stars fall down, scatter on the ground, beauty is you”.

Zigzanny is a lovely piece of dreamy melancholic punk pop, it’s got an engaging melody and a hauntingly ethereal vocal which makes it a joy on the ears.

I’m really looking forward to the release of their debut EP and hearing more from this four piece, give them a listen and get following them.
