PINLIGHT - Armour (lo-fi remix)
PINLIGHT is the alt pop songwriting project of Edinburgh based multi instrumentalist Jenny Laahs. Jenny is a hearing impaired musician, acquiring a profound unilateral hearing loss at the age of four.
She began performing on the songwriter scene in Edinburgh in 2014, playing ukulele and piano. In 2018 she transitioned to a more electronic sound and adopted the moniker PINLIGHT, in reference to A Pin-Light Bent by Joanna Newsom.
Inspired by Kate Bush, Passion Pit, and Stealing Sheep, PINLIGHT combines these influences into retro tinged soundscapes, with themes of self affirmation, love and relationships.
After gigging around Edinburgh with a live band in 2018, Jenny retreated to her home studio in 2019 to record the independently produced and released debut album, Grow Slow, produced entirely in mono in recognition of her hearing loss.
In 2020, Jenny has been working on remixes to be released in October and November, the first of these was the remix of Armour which dropped on Friday 30 October.
Armour is a luscious lo-fi electro pop track, that melody set by the drum machine is just super chilled, it floats along dreamily and we get euphoric interjections of instrumentation. I loved what sounded like a brass section in the early part of the track.
The chilled vibe of the track is perfectly complemented by Jenny’s fantastic vocal which is a real highlight.
The song touches upon the aforementioned topics especially of love and relationships when Jenny sings the chorus of “that it’s too late for me cos I’ve already fallen, it’s too late for me to escape unscathed, it’s too late for me cos I took off my armour, it’s too late for me cos I already fell for him, for him, for him, for, for him”.
The lo-fi remix of Armour is fantastic and I look forward to hearing the next remix which I believe is due to be released towards the end of November.
I have to ashamedly admit I was unaware of PINLIGHT before I received the review submission, but as soon as I listened to the track I was hooked and PINLIGHT is now firmly on my radar of the artists to be watched in 2021.
