Who are Cellos

We are a young four piece Indie Rock band formed in 2019 by songwriters and friends Niall Fenwick and Joe Teasdale. We have both performed in bands from a young age and we started the band to take our new songs, written over the summer of 2019 to the next level. Also in the band we have Jack Walker (bass) and Harry Mason (drums).

Where are you from

County Durham

What music genre are you

We have an Indie Rock sound developed on from British bands from the 90’s and 00’s.

For fans of

Our sound is rapidly evolving by each song, but our main influences are 90’s Indie bands as well as 00’s rock. This can be seen by our jangly Stone Roses-esque opener Wanderlust to our early Arctic Monkeys inspired Pinnacle. So fans of these bands will definitely find our sound recognisable, but with a North East edge to it.

What music have you released so far

We released our debut EP Sea or Sky in October 2019 and are picking up new fans and live shows at a growing rate. We rehearse in Darlington at The Forum which prior to lockdown was our base and we are fans of the local music scene in general.

oh! and My Thoughts

Cellos released the seven track EP Sea or Sky at the tale end of 2019 and It really is a blast of Indie rock as it comes in at under seventeen minutes.

The whole EP is a great listen, with the standout tracks for me being Wanderlust, So Happy and Pinnacle.

Wanderlust is their stadium ready track, it sparkles in positivity with a brimming guitar riff and drums that are just begging to be played loud as fuck.

I love the witty lyrics of the track as it describes that strong to desire to break free and travel to discover the world, especially the line “let’s go out I said to the girl on the passport office, she looked back and said je me sais pas comprende” that definitely brought a smile to my face.

It also has a straightforward chant chorus of “are we having fun yet she said……….are we having fun yet”. It’s simple but will raise the roof when played live.

So Happy is another banging track, again the melody and rhythm set is just exemplary and has a real catchiness to it, it really does hook you in and want to bounce along.

It’s another feel good song describing the happy emotions of falling in love, particularly the lines “I’ve never felt like this before my heart is beating so hard it’s sore, every time I look in your eyes sends me flying high”.

Once again it has an ear worm of a chorus “you make me so happy, ……….you make me so happy”.

And final track I’m focussing on is Pinnacle and as the guys themselves said you can clearly the heavy Arctic Monkeys influence in this track, but it actually adds a bit diversity into the EP, as it’s more experimental than their normal sound, it has heavier drums which pound at your heart.

Lyrically it is still razor sharp there were a couple of lines that had me chuckling, especially the opening lines “your the pinnacle of attractiveness and I really like the way you dress, my head’s spinning around at the speed of light, though I think I look good, I probably smell like shite so we won’t stand too close together, we’ll just smile across the dance floor”.

Now I know I’m late to the party with Cellos, but if you are too please give the EP a listen, it’s a fantastic collection of tracks and showcases a band who will drive the indie scene in the North East of England once live gigs are back.

I fully intend to go see them as soon as I can !!!
