We've been an official four-piece for about a year but Lemon Drink has existed since 2017. Me (Sophie) and KC started out as an acoustic duo which then evolved to a full band sound in 2018, before the final line-up as it is now!

Prior to the launch, we released two singles from the record, A Song For You and Gomez, both also available on all platforms. We've also contributed a track to Last Nigh From Glasgow's 'Isolation Sessions' record, this is a compilation of artists on the label covering one another and proceeds are being donated to venues who are being impacted by Covid-19. We've taken on a cover of TeenCanteen's How We Met (Cherry Pie), it's a much more stripped back sound than we usually have as it was recorded from the flat in lockdown!

Vic Galloway has been kind enough to give us a spin a few times on his BBC Radio Scotland Show. BBC Alba's Rapal have also been lovely and played us a few times, even featuring our debut single A Song For You as track of the week when it came out. We've also had great support from Postcards From The Underground, The Third Class Ticket Radio Show and Next Up With Tommy Clark.

oh! and My Thoughts

I stumbled upon Lemon Drink by accident and I’m so glad I did, the debut EP Better Run is brilliant.

The opening track Pull Your House Down is a great intro to the band, it’s got a bass heavy rhythm, with some clever guitar hooks throughout, its a blast of indie pop rock dealing with unwanted attention, clearly warning that if you don’t stay away your house will be metaphorically pulled down, unless of course they do a sideline in demolition then it may have been literal ?

Manic steps the pace up a bit, it has a punkier edge to it, but it is still packed with jangly guitars and has a real feel good pop vibe to it, it plays about with pace towards the end of the track, it slows down before building up to that punchy punk finish. It’s a song about misconceptions about how someone should appear but the lyrics blow that out of the water when it sings of “manic pixie girl dream won’t be me”.

The next track A Song For You was their debut single and it’s the pick of a very good bunch of songs, there are no withered stems on this EP. This is another indie pop belter, it’s got a very catchy melody that is driven once the drums kick in. It’s about the issues faced by girls when they encounter for want of a better word ‘players’ and their retort to that, the final repeat of the words “I’m not here to have you waste my time” certainly stick in the head.

The final track Gomez has a much slower vibe, it has a catchy guitar hook, which is loud and bold but underpins the song, the chorus is unleashed on us which a great guitar riff that will have you bopping up and down.

Better Run is a great mix of tracks, some fantastic instrumentation with a charming vocal that cuts through each song perfectly. Lyrically, it is definitely a bunch of songs written from a female point of view, they are witty, sharp and make a purposeful point whilst complementIng, not diluting, the music.

This is fabulous debut EP and I’m anticipating big things for this Glasgow quartet, looking forward to hearing more from them in the future. Yet another band to my almost endless bands I want to see.
