Go To Girl - Questions for the Band
This weeks Questions for the Band features the fantastic Edinburgh four piece Go To Girl and as always I will hand you over to them to introduce themselves.
A gentle start, for those that don't know the band that well. can you tell us a little bit about yourselves ?
We are Go To Girl and we make indie/pop/rock music! We are based more or less in Edinburgh and have been gigging since early 2019 though we got together the year before that. The band started when I decided to pull away from the singer songwriter route I had been following for a number of years. I wanted to make music that was more like what I enjoyed listening to and I wanted to see people dancing when they were at our gigs! I was already friends with Anna who is our amazing drummer, was so happy when she said yes to doing something together. Then after trying a couple of different other members we ended up with Mike on guitar, who fit in straight away, and he brought in his friend Angus on bass. We all shared the same inappropriate sense of humour so I knew things would work well.
It took quite a while for the band to start gigging but it was well worth the wait and we are loving finally getting to share and perform our songs.
Who are the bands musical influences ?
We’re a pretty mixed bag when it comes to musical influences, we all grew up listening to similar music like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blink 182, Green Day, Foo Fighters etc. At the moment I’m listening to bands like The 1975, Haim, Fickle Friends and Sigrid who all influence my song writing in one way or another. Some other influences from the rest of the band include Biffy Clyro, Don Broco, Foy Vance and Mark Lettieri.
It’s great to have each member of the band’s influences mashed together when we write music, we’re never sure what’s going to happen which makes it fun!
What is your writing process ? Music or Lyrics First ?
It happens differently every time, sometimes Mike will send a riff through for me to work on. Other times I’ll turn up to rehearsal with a fully written song. Most of the time lyrics come first, I often think of stuff when I’m driving so I need to pull over and write the lyrics in the notes on my phone before I forget them!
What is your favourite and least favourite parts of being in a band ?
The best part of being in a band has to be getting to hang out and make music with your friends. And a close second would be getting to share that music with people both live at gigs and digitally online.
The worst part of being in a band is not getting to meet up enough. We all live in different places, although our base is Edinburgh, and it’s super tricky to find a good time for us all to practice or even just hang out as we all have busy lives. However when we do we enjoy it and that’s all that matters!
Looking ahead for this year, what are your plans ? can we expect new music ? and do you have any ambitions that you want to fulfill this year ?
This year we’ll definitely be releasing a new single, hopefully our first music video as well! We’re hoping to get a couple of festival slots too fingers crossed and we are also in the middle of planning a wee Scottish tour so keep your eyes peeled for that.
And finally, if you could only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what would it be and why ?
I can’t speak for the rest of the band but for me it has to be Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rumours’ album. Nobody can fault that album it’s just perfection.
Huge thanks to Go To Girl for giving us a fabulous insight into their band and that new single they mentioned is called Honesty it was released yesterday Friday 20 March 2020 and it’s a perfect piece of pop (see the review below):
