Tom Lumley and the Brave Liaison - Questions for the Band
This weeks Questions for the Band were put to fast rising indie stars Tom Lumley and the Brave Liaison, if you follow me on Twitter you will know how much I love these guys, but as usual over to the band to tell you more.
A gentle start, for those that don't know the band that well, can you tell us a little bit about yourselves ?
We’re a 4 piece indie/rock band from Cambridgeshire that have been together since 2017. We have Tom Lumley on vocals and guitar, Jake Day on Lead Guitar, Billy Stewart on Bass and Backing Vocals and Jonny Thompson on the drums.
What is your writing process ? is it music or lyrics first ?
It’s normally music first but each time differs. Jake and Tom write the songs, sometimes that happens together in the studio but sometimes they’ll already have an idea and send it to the other to build on.
Which artists/bands do you draw your music inspiration from ?
We’re big fans of heavy riffs so currently we’re massively inspired by The Amazons. More recently we’ve really enjoyed the work of Yonaka and Kid Kapichi too.
What do you enjoy most about being in a band ? And least ?
The most would definitely be being on stage. We feel that’s where we’re really at our best. For me (Tom) there’s not a lot I don’t enjoy about it but we all know Jake isn’t the biggest fan of the long journeys touring.
What are you doing to cope and get through lockdown ? Any tips for others ?
We’ve just been trying to keep as busy as we can and keep the momentum going on our socials with live streams and isolation sessions. We also released an EP which was already announced way before lock down and it felt right to continue with the release as their had already been so much build up.
If you could choose to support any band who would it be and why ?
That’s a tough one as there’s so many great bands but probably Nothing But Thieves. We absolutely love what they do and feel we could learn a lot from gigging with them.
Which venue would you most like to play and why ?
O2 Brixton Academy. There’s just something about that venue that makes the experience of a gig so special. A lot of us have seen our favourite bands play there too so it’s definitely one on the bucket list.
Given our current living situation with Covid -19, what are your plans for the rest of the year ?
We’re busy writing so you can definitely expect some new music. Other than that we’ll just be hoping to get back to playing live as soon as we can.
And finally if you could each choose only one album to listen to for the rest of your life, what would it be ?
Tom - The Amazons (1st Album). It’s just an album that never gets boring, I couldn’t tell you the amount of times I’ve now played it through.
Jake - ‘Black and White’ by The Maine because it’s start to finish feel good pop-rock. It’s very nostalgic for me, takes me back to simpler days and listening to it still gives me energy.
Billy - For me it would probably be Absolution by Muse. I just love the limitless creativity. You cant pidgeonhole it. It's hard but soft, its complicated yet simple, its rock but classical. What a work of art.
Jonny - Sam Fender - Hypersonic Missiles. Despite it being his first album and Sam still being at such a young age, I feel the album shows his class and that he can write tracks that will last forever.
Thanks to Tom and the lads for their time and giving us a little insight into what they have been doing in lockdown and what’s next on the horizon.
