Retro Video Club - Questions for the Band

This weeks Questions for the Band features Retro Video Club, I caught up with them just a few weeks ago. As usual I will let them introduce themselves.

A gentle start, for those that don't know the band that well. can you tell us a little bit about yourselves ?

We are Retro Video Club, a four piece Indie Rock band from Edinburgh formed in 2015. We played in different bands around Edinburgh growing up and when those all came to an end we were all looking for new projects. We are Liam Allison, Sam McGill, Michael Ward and Kieran Burt.

Who are the bands musical influences ?

We’re all influenced by a range of different artists really. For me and Liam is was Green Day that made us pick up a guitar for the first time. Other big influences would be The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Kings of Leon. The list could go on.

What is your writing process ? Music or Lyrics First ?

Liam does a lot of the writing on his own and then brings his idea for the song into the studio. We’ll then sit together and build up the idea into a fully formed demo to get an idea of what it might sound like. I think he usually does music first and then build his vocal melodies and words around that.

What is your favourite and least favourite parts of being in a band ?

The best part is being on tour, waking up in a different place every day and playing to new people every night. We’ve been really fortune to travel to some amazing cities and play some special rooms around Europe and the UK.

The worst part is probably the times in between shows and studio time. When you’re not constantly busy playing or recording, you’re just waiting for the next show to come around and that can feel like a lifetime.

What items are always on your rider for a gig ?

Nothing too exciting really, if we’re fed then we’re usually happy! Few beers, some waters and we’re good to go.

If you could choose to support any band who would it be and why ?

I’d love to support The Killers cause I think there live shows are insane, and it’d likely be a stadium show so that goes without saying.

What are you doing do get through lockdown and do you have any tips for others ?

Just keeping busy, writing a lot and recording demos. Been getting back into running too and I’ve never been on so many video calls...

Given our current living situation with Covid -19, what are your plans for the rest of the year ?

Well we were supposed to be on tour and in the studio right as lockdown started. Those dates are rescheduled to September and October, so that’s the plan just now. Obviously we need to see what the guidelines are with regards to venues opening back up, but we’re hopeful we’ll be out playing by then!

And finally, if you could only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what would it be and why ?

I’d listen to We’ll Live and Die in These Towns because I think it’s a timeless concept, so it’ll ring true forever.

Thanks to Sam for taking the time to tell us a little bit about Retro Video Club and what they been up to for the last few months during lockdown.

Just in case you’re unsure We’ll Live and Die in These Towns is from The Enemy.
