Gallus - The Hunter S Thompson 12 March 2020

Gallus are a five piece Indie Punk band from Glasgow, they are Barry Dolan (vocals), Craig Doris (bass), Eamon Ewins (guitar), Arion Xenos (guitar) and Paul Ewins (drums).

Gallus have built a reputation on the back of their energetic and frenetic live shows so I’m really looking forward to this one tonight.

They are supported in Dundee tonight firstly by Choka, a three piece doom rock band from Edinburgh, they play a loud bone crushing set and warm up the crowd for what’s to come.

Next up is local Dundee four piece Carousel, they bring their brand of indie rock to the stage, and despite some issues with the bass guitar, they play a good set of indie bangers.

We then welcome the headliners Gallus to the stage and they open with Looking Like a Mess ant they mean business as they launch into a full on assault on the ears and Barry wastes no time in getting himself straight into the crowd.

Next up is Talk and the frenzied punk theme is continued as the bands edgy guitar riffs and sharp drums threaten to raise the cellar roof. Marmalade gives us a little respite is it is not quite so frenetic, it has a more melodic riff to it but again is vocally strong.

As the next song Eye to Eye is introduced we are encouraged to boo, not sure why as I don’t pick up the reason, but the crowd duly obliged mockingly booing !!! What Do I Know is a new tune and it’s a cracker, another full on drum, blistering guitars and the lasting lyric “what do I know”.

Breathless is up next and is their latest single, released tomorrow (13 March) and is another indie punk banger, fast paced, angst ridden lyrics what’s not to like and it’s also probably a description of how the crowd are feeling.

The next song is my favourite tune of the evening, it is Making Tracks, it introduces itself with a very slick guitar riff and a thundering drum beat, it has a real bounce to it, pure rock and roll, with that hard punky edge.

The evening is hurtling along with great pace and brings us Split, this is a song loaded with great guitar salvos, frenetic drumming and an manic vocal delivering every word with feel and intensity. We are then treated to Nice, the song that announced Gallus To the world, it is another punchy indie punk tune, racing guitar riffs and huge drums.

As the words “this is our last song” leave Dolan’s mouth it is hard to believe we are reaching the end of the set, however, we are not disappointed as Actual Factual is an attention grabbing monster of a song, leaving the crowd wanting more.

Wow what can I say that set was just fucking awesome !!! the energy of the band, delivering one blistering tune after another and the intensity of Dolan was just great to witness. These guys are building a reputation on the strength of their live sets and now having seen it first hand I have to endorse that viewpoint.
