Dan Crook - Stop the Press

Dan Crook, is a spoken word songwriter and musician from Southend-On-Sea, he is on a crusade to right the wrongs of the world with one single at a time.

His latest release Stop the Press came out on Friday 15 May and is an acerbic view of newspapers and journalism.

The track itself is catchy, with a bit of a raspy guitar riff and an easy drum beat which set the bouncy rhythm.

It’s the message behind the lyrics that gives this song the hook to buy you into it, it’s a bitingly critical view of the press and how easily it can be influenced by money. It makes the press and their claims to offer freedom of speech irrelevant when that freedom can be bought to influence the message.

Crook starts by telling us “they say there’s a handful of people controlling the western media, when free speech is no longer a privilege it’s a business, selling news is arguably more important now than sharing news” .

The chorus screams out “stop the press” and precedes to talk about “headlines written on pay cheques” and “paid opinion on page four” highlighting the concerns that freedom of speech is no longer the aim of the press it’s about paid influencers as the lyrics describe “sixteen million read the papers, that’s a lot of responsibility for one man!”.

I really enjoyed Stop the Press it’s a catchy rhythm and the opinions in the lyrics are how I feel about the press, particularly the words “have you ever wanted more”.

It’s well written, and hits hard with its message and the point it wants to make. It’s a one man crusade, what will be his next target, I for one await with interest.
