Post Ironic State are a five piece new wave/alternative band from Perth, they are Jai McCann (vocals/guitar/synthesiser), Josephine "Jojo" Hawley (synthesisers), Calum Doig (guitar/vocals), Elliot Johnson (bass) and Ross Stewart (percussion/vocals/synthesisers).

They have already established themselves with their past three singles and recent live session, which have been held at the highest by the likes of The National, BBC Radio and their ever growing fan base.

Despite the complications that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought the world, Post Ironic State are looking to come out of this stronger than ever, with the release of their fourth single, Grin and Bear, recorded by Scotty Anderson (Young Fathers, Glasvegas, The View).

Lead singer Jai McCann describes the song as:

The antithesis of a love song. Grin and Bear seems like a song about a relationship but is more about struggling to come to terms with loneliness.

Grin and Bear is released today, Thursday 23 July and it’s a fantastic track, it is wrapped in superb synthesised shards of sound giving it a glorious danceable melody, this is for want of a better description “dark disco”.

Post Ironic State continue to evolve and hone their skills with each track that they release and Grin and Bear is no exception, it is their best work to date, the instrumentation is first class and the layers of synths and drum give the track a very hypnotic feel.

Vocally, when I listen to this I can’t help but think of Tom Smith from The Editors which is no bad thing in my view, as Jai produces a really strong performance on the track.

Grin and Bear is a great song, building on their reputation of writing dark danceable disco tracks and that combined with just a little punk snarl, lifts them above their contemporaries.

Jump aboard and get listening, definitely a band with huge ambitions which may very well be fulfilled post lockdown.
