Kate Mackie - Nothing Without You
Born and bred in the north-east of Scotland, Katie Mackie first made her name in her home country’s music scene back in 2018. She graduated with an honours degree in popular music that same year following the release of her debut album Kick It in the Head.
Lockdown was a fruitful time for Katie. Her first release in two years, Glow, produced by JP O’Grady, set a new benchmark for her artistic potential and was picked up by radio stations and music press across the UK, as well as Spotify’s Scottish themed editorial playlist, Scotify.
Hot on its heels was Terricot Town, released in March 2021. The track’s elevating melodies and carefully curated lyrics were an instant hit with listeners, catapulting Katie onto the national scene with support from BBC Introducing in Scotland and The Scotsman.
And now Katie has released her new single Nothing Without You and she had this to say about it:
I wrote the first verse of Nothing Without You at the end of 2019, but I struggled to emotionally connect with the song at first. I shelved it for a year and picked it back up again when lots of positive things were happening in my life. I like the contrast between the parts I wrote before and after a break from the song, it starts with a melancholic aura and then develops into this warm, comfortable experience.
I think that’s quite relatable to everyone in some shape or form, noticing changes in attitude and perception when you revisit things throughout your life.
With Nothing Without You Katie brings us an emotion and vulnerability in the opening vocals, delicate and dreamy and very much adding to the magical melody of the track.
I love the floaty soaring vocals in the chorus, extended words making it feel like you are drifting along in the wind, it’s a track that feels full of hope and optimism, I particularly like the verse when Katie sings “What a day you’ve had, go outside and enjoy the day, whatever seems bad will see the sun and just melt away”.
Nothing Without You is another track that will enhance Katie’s already burgeoning reputation is a fantastic writer of dreamy indie pop and there is nothing to stop her hitting the heights in 2022, certainly an artist to watch.
