The Vegan Leather - Gloaming

Formed in the historic weaving and textile town of Paisley in 2014, The Vegan Leather are Gianluca, Marie, Matt and Duncan.

Over the past five years, The Vegan Leather have established themselves as one of the leading lights of Scotland’s music scene, not just for their dancefloor ready pop smarts, but for a succession of live performances showcasing just how effortlessly they can pull it off. With a list of memorable appearances at TRNSMT Festival, The Great Escape, Electric Fields, and Tenement Trail, and support slots with the likes of Paolo Nutini and Phoenix at the legendary Barrowland Ballroom, they have made a resounding impact on fans and venues all over the UK.

The Vegan Leather return after a landmark 2019 that saw them release their long-awaited debut album ‘Poor Girls / Broken Boys’, a record defined by its deliriously infectious pop melodies, pulsing rhythms and razor-sharp cultural insight.

The album attracted widespread critical acclaim and enthusiastic support from the likes of Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos and BBC Radio One's Jack Saunders and led to the band recording a live session for BBC Radio 1 at their legendary Maida Vale studios. Shortly after the album’s release, The Vegan Leather won Best Live Act at the 2019 Scottish Alternative Music Awards and were named by The List magazine among the year's Hot 100 most influential cultural figures in Scotland.

Their new single Gloaming is the beginning of a new chapter for The Vegan Leather, it lures into a darker narrative and was released on Friday 30 October.

Commenting on the inspiration that Emily Bronte’s novel Wuthering Heights had on the track Marie says:

We had been sitting on the tune for a while and had got it sounding quite dark and mysterious , I always felt transported to another world when I listened to it. It was around the same time that I started reading Wuthering Heights. A big portion of the book is set in wild and untamed landscapes and this really got me thinking about the song. I started to envision that same atmosphere. The song needed to be set somewhere gloomy, dark, mystical, half visible, and that’s how I got to the word gloaming. The song sort of became a kind of monologue of a menacing narrator trying to entice someone into the wilderness with them.

In Wuthering Heights, Cathy always seems to run to the moors to seek solace whenever she’s feeling overwhelmed, but it always feels like there’s something sinister lurking. Gloaming then turned into a song about being led astray when all you're looking for is comfort. It’s about being led into your own darkness, following your ‘inner demons’ but still retaining that bit of light and goodness inside of you.

Gianluca says of the recording process:

Our whole ethos moving ahead of the album (even before lockdown) was to record from home and self produce. Marie and I started work on Gloaming in November just after the album released, revisiting the same recording methods we had used in our 2016-2017 work and we hit a big nostalgia trip. We hadn’t sat in my room passing a microphone back and forth quickly recording vocals off the cuff for years at that point, it sparked a real fire and joy in us.

Once our tour wrapped in February, we had our sights set on releasing new music as soon as possible, we had booked into record the drums for Gloaming (the only element we couldn’t do on our own) at Park Lane Studios (with Lewis Andrew). Two days later lockdown was announced so we were very lucky.

Taking its name from the old Scottish word for ‘twilight’, Gloaming conjures images of wild, untamed landscapes and feverish dark nights; where sinister, otherworldly forces are at large, attempting to lead us astray. It is a tale of temptation, a tussle between human goodness and the demons that lie within.

Gloaming is an eerie and frenetic piece of electronic pop, it has a dark infectious synth laden melody and a hauntingly beautiful vocal from Marie that captures the delirious attempts to escape the imagined creatures of the encroaching Gloaming.

It is a track that delivers a punch and has an urgency that captures your attention from start to finish, it’s an absolute dance floor filler !!

It was an inspiring decision by The Vegan Leather to strip back the recording and production of Gloaming as it creates an intimate and raw feel which really suits the dark undertones of the track.

The Vegan Leather are back and it’s a welcome return to one of the most exciting bands in Scotland.
