Katie Nicoll - Laugh a Bit Longer
Katie Nicoll is a sixteen year old singer/songwriter from Kirriemuir in Angus, she has been plying her trade in local clubs and bars and has released her new EP Laugh a Bit Longer on 28 February.
In her own words Katie says:
“I’m feeling completely ecstatic to be able to share this with the world. Each song has been massively influenced by things and feelings I’ve experienced whilst growing up over the last couple of years. They each mean so so much to me, and I can’t wait for everyone to hear it”
The first track The Moon Song is a nice little pop tune, with some country/folk vibes going on and is a song about growing old, it has a nice chorus with use of some echo effects on her voice.
Regina George is a rockier track and is the lead single from the EP, it’s in my opinion a song about celebrity status and the need not to seek that limelight and just enjoy your own life highlighted by the lyric “don’t need your drama, I don’t need your lies”.
The next track Keep It Out of Trouble is another rockier tune, and is a song about an unhealthy relationship, the introducing lyrics “I don’t know, I don’t know if I should tell you this, but I don’t think he is deserving of your cherry lips” setting the scene. It is a well worked track and gives the opportunity to go a bit stronger on the vocals.
Glasgow is a completed contrast to the previous track, it is a melodic ballad about the love of the city and is a really nice tune, and highlights the softer side to Katie’s voice.
The final track is Laugh a Bit Longer and has another nice guitar melody, and I will let Katie tell you the meaning behind the song in her words.
Laugh a Bit Longer was a track I wrote in 2018 whilst reminiscing over how much easier life felt when I was small. The main message of the song is that it’s okay to let go of the seriousness of teenage/ adult life sometimes, and to let your more cheerful self take over and learn to laugh a bit longer. I felt that it was important that I name the EP after this song.
I really liked the EP, there is a good variation of style between the songs and allows Katie to showcase the different vocal range that she can offer.
She is definitely a very talented young lady and one to keep on eye on to see where she goes from here.
