Minas - Drinker

Minas was born in Athens and grew up in the South Wales valleys.

Starting life as a house producer, he honed his own music joining the Cardiff group Dead Method after university. Accepted onto the Forté Project in 2018, Minas also pursued his solo endeavour, and explored a dark hip-hop inspired sound in his initial EPs Kid and Granted. He parted ways with Dead Method in late 2018 but continues to produce for the project.

Both of his solo EPs saw underground acclaim and success, with a sold out Cardiff launch show in May 2019 for Granted, which was released via The Orchard by Disrupción Records.

Since then, Minas worked on his debut album which he finished in lockdown. Drinker his latest single, which was released on Friday 24 July, is a prologue to that forthcoming album.

Although the song does not appear on the album, he says:

it sets the scene of what’s to come

When asked about the concept behind the track he says:

The single is an introduction to the album. It won’t be on that album as it didn’t quite fit with the final tracks, but I still felt like it was important to share. It’s about the point you get to when you, a person that thrives on helping friends, realising you’ve been wrapped up in your own head and you that you haven’t been helping or even in a position to help.

Drinker is a fantastic hip-hop inspired electronic track, it has a gorgeously chilled dreamlike melody to it, which catches your interest from the opening beats.

The song deals with mental health struggles of the protagonist and thoughts on tackling their own issues whilst still being supportive of the friends around them, this is perfect described in the lyrics of the chorus when Minas sings “you know I’d be there if it meant, that I could leave my thoughts behind, I’d be there for you then but lately I’ve been caught behind and my goals haven’t been met, I’m still taking way too much time with four drinks on the head, I’m talking shit again”.

Drinker is a great track, it really highlights the Minas’ skills as a producer, as he layers sound after sound onto a catchy chilled melody and complements all of this with a great vocal.

I didn’t know too much about Minas before listening to Drinker, but he has now got my attention and look forward to hearing more from him in the future.

The track is accompanied by an official music video, which was shot, directed and edited by Ed Townend who said:

I got a brief from James on the video to capture an abstract mood that reflected the song and then put that against his message of that struggle between looking after yourself and your friends or loved ones.  I also tried to reflect a bit of that “ghost town” feeling we’ve all noticed in the past few months, I think capturing this moment in time was important and inescapable.
