Leif Coffield - monsta-san
Leif Coffield is a 24-year-old singer-songwriter and producer who is emerging from the shadows with a unique take on gothic electro-pop.
Originally from East Kilbride, Coffield moved to Chapelton in South Lanarkshire when he was 18, where he lived in a run-down caravan for three years. It was here he found his voice which, like his surroundings, he describes as, “cold, dark and broken”.
Now, with the release of monsta-san his most ambitious track to date, Coffield confirms himself as undoubtedly one of the most exciting young names around. ”
monsta-san was released on 27 March it lures you into it with a contagious drum beat, with a hushed almost gloomy vocal, before some chaotic non descriptive repetitive chanting which constructs a rather catchy chorus. Lyrically Coffield sings of “monsters under his bed” in a way that’s breezy, yet simultaneously dark and uneasy.
This is young Scottish talent with a story to share, and a unique way of telling it, monsta-san is fresh, beguiling and weird, but definitely sticks in your head long after the track has ended.
You need to give this a listen to appreciate the dark beauty of this song and I’m not alone in thinking this as it’s already receiving some critical airplay with Amazing Radio’s Jim Gellatly naming it track of the day on 2 April.
