Narwhals - Unstitched
Alt-indie outfit Narwhals have been making waves with their own brand of darkly tinged post-punk since the release of their debut album Two Darks Windows in 2018. Narwhals are: Jacob Patrick (guitar/vocals), Harry Moore (guitar), Christian Sinclair (bass) and Liam Middleton (drums).
Their grunge-infused baritone vocalisations and lyrical storytelling have seen the quartet becoming a mainstay of the Manchester music scene for over a decade. With influences from a kaleidoscope of genres (Joy Division, Mogwai, Phoebe Bridgers), Narwhals’ latest delve into emotive narratives gives us Unstitched an exploration of heartache and separation during an untethering of a failed romance.
It offers a glimpse into the evolution of the band as they prepare to drop their sophomore album New Years Drunk In A Cocktail Bar later this year.
At just under three minutes, Unstitched is a testament to Narwhals’ musical maturity and their journey as a band. The emotional depth of the track is brought to life by melodic guitar riffs, percussive drum beats, and a vocal performance reminiscent of Ian Curtis.
Narwhals is very much the project of Jacob Patrick and when asked about the story behind the track he said:
“Ever since I was five years old I’ve expressed myself by making up songs. Narwhals is a deeply personal journey, a diary of my adulthood, my way of making life make sense.”
