Created by frontman Stephen McAll, Constant Follower is an intriguing experimental folk band featuring Andrew Pankhurst (guitar), Amy Campbell (backing vocals/synth), and Kathleen Stosch (backing vocals, synth and bass). 

Support has come from Gideon Coe on BBC Radio 6, Vic Galloway on BBC Radio Scotland and Folk Radio.

As a teenager, McAll woke in hospital to find he had survived an attack by a gang that had left him with a catastrophic head injury and every childhood memory stolen from him.

The next decade was spent in a cabin on the West Coast where Hebridean air was whipped in with the time to reflect, eventually allowing him to begin songwriting again. The songs were originally recorded as raw ideas - thoughts and feelings forged in fleeting moments and recorded onto old cassettes. 

The result is a childhood imagined against a backdrop that, like the sea, is as serene as it is wild, ever-changing, yet resolute. Constant Follower have unbridled gift for tapping into the thoughts and feelings that permeate the human experience, no matter what walk of life this takes. 

Constant Follower, fresh from being named Scotland on Sunday’s artist of the week, release their new single Set Aside Some Time today, Thursday 30 July and is the lead single from their forthcoming debut album Neither Is, Nor Ever Was.

Set Aside Some Time is dreamy indie pop/folk and has a very melancholic melody, it’s got a wooziness to it that just wants you to chill and absorb the full story.

The lyrics are warm and beautify and will tug on your heart strings, it’s a simple ode to the passing of time and how precious that is as outlined in the lyrics when McAll sings “so save yourself some heart til you need it, you’ll need it, and set aside some time til you need it, you’ll need it”.

Those poignant lyrics are sang to a simple fingerpicked acoustic guitar and this makes it feel as powerful as the ticking clock of time itself.

Set Aside Some Time is a beautiful track, it’s a haunting testimonial to the temporary joys and fleeting moments that define the human experience, no matter the different paths that may be travelled.

Constant Follower are another band that I wasn’t aware of and having now discovered them, I look forward with interest to the arrival of their forthcoming album.
