Novaborn - My Lane
Darrell Cram is a Scottish singer/songwriter and producer who releases music as the artist Novaborn.
He took the difficult decision upon graduating to put a biology career on hold and take a shot at his dream and ever since then has been on a roller-coaster journey to make it a reality.
Having trained in singing as a teenager performing in choirs and bedroom boybands, he recognised that to evolve into a genuine music artist he needed to upgrade his skillset. And just like any good Rocky training montage he took to the internet as he taught himself piano, music theory and songwriting along with some mountain running in the snow for good measure.
Novaborn learned his craft first by producing dance music anthems, gaining support from numerous blogs, promoters and independent EDM labels before switching into the bedroom pop/songwriter vibe that he is now known for.
This genre pairs perfectly with his soulful tone and range and has resulted in the creation of tracks that seem perfectly suited for the radio. In a time where for every Lewis Capaldi we have one hundred songwriters copying the same formula, it is refreshing to find a singer willing to carve his own space and embrace the modern pop sound.
Novaborn's efforts have not gone unnoticed either, after initially being tipped by Capital XTRA as "one of the exciting young singers emerging from the Scottish music scene" he was more recently nominated by BBC Scotland as a finalist in their songwriting competition of 2019.
This awarded him national radio play for the first time as well as an exclusive BBC iPlayer music video which is a milestone for many performers. This progression shows the determination of an artist who is willing to put his music on the line, face the failures that come along with that before coming back stronger.
Novaborn’s new single My Lane, is released today, 1 August and it’s the first track from his upcoming EP Thots About U due to be released later this year.
My Lane is a brilliant bit of bedroom pop, the track has a very funky beat which gives it a great melody.
The use of layered sounds give the track some real depth and allows the vocals to shine as they are confidently delivered.
Lyrically it’s a song dealing with the negative vibes in a toxic relationship, it’s about self worth and calling this out and being defiant and moving past this negativity, I particularly liked the lines “there’s nowhere to run and nowhere to hide, we have to learn to keep it inside, I think you’d be amazed by what you’d find” but I think it’s best described when Novaborn sing “we’re not compatible fuck your principle best get out of my way if you’re in my lane”.
My Lane is a fantastic track from an artist I discovered when he was nominated for last years BBC Scotland songwriting competition, but each new release gets better and better.
As Darrell himself says:
Take a chance on my music, you won't regret it, and take a chance on a man who refuses to quit until he has his audience as he really doesn't want to give up and wear a lab coat.
I would fully endorse those words, Novaborn is definitely a rising star.
