Keir Gibson - Circles

Fort William based alt-pop songwriter Keir Gibson returns with his third single, Circles.

The emerging Scottish singer/songwriter is back with his first release of 2020, after an impressive breakthrough in 2019. Keir released his first single Eyes Wide in August last year, the day before performing at the Belladrum Festival, the Highland singer’s home festival

Since then he released second single Hollow in November 2019 and that was played on BBC Radio 1 several times by DJs Scott Mills and Molly King.

The Scottish Sun described Keir as

Scotland’s next big breakthrough talent

This was all before rounding off the year performing to 5,000 revellers at Edinburgh’s famous Hogmanay Street Party.

This year was set to see Keir bring his full live band out to entertain audiences at the Kelvingrove Bandstand, Belladrum, Live at Leeds and to support arena-fillers The Stereophonics.

Like all musicians, Keir’s best laid plans have been interrupted by COVID-19. Instead, he has been entertaining music fans virtually, including performing a set on the King Tut’s Facebook page as part of the recent Sofathon Singalong.

Keir said:

It’s gutting to have my early 2020 and summer shows postponed, but obviously everyone’s safety comes first. I’ve been working hard to reschedule gigs for later this year and hope to announce these very soon.

In the meantime, I’m continuing to work on new music and am keen to keep sharing it with everyone who has supported me over the last 12 months. ‘Circles’ is the first of a few new tracks I’m hoping to release this year. Hopefully it entertains people while they’re stuck inside!.

Circles is the third instalment in a series of emotion laden, escapist pop songs all produced by London duo The Nocturns, mixed by Matty Green (Dua Lipa, Dermot Kennedy) and mastered by Grammy winning engineer Joe La Porta.

The track gives Keir’s perspective on a relationship that’s past its best, he says:

Circles is about two people who are in a constant cycle of falling in and out with each other. They both know it’s unhealthy but at the same time they’re too afraid to lose the other person by turning their backs on the relationship and admitting that it’s over.

And the good news is that Circles was released today, Wednesday 20 May 2020, and it’s a little bit of alt pop escapism.

It’s got a very catchy and upbeat rhythm, driven by the soft drums underpinning the track it has you toe tapping straight away. The vocal comes in from the outset and Keir delivers the lyrics with emotion and soul.

With the melody of the song and the descriptive lyrics I can see this being used in an American teen movie or TV series as it evokes that image of high school kids jumping in their cars with their girlfriends for the trip to high school football match.

The lyrics talk of “who’s to blame if it’s no ones fault” and “here we are going round in circles, we fall apart every time it’s working out” and “broken glass on the shattered floor” all painting pictures of a relationship that’s not working but doesn’t want to be given up.

Circles is a brilliant track and builds on the momentum gained in 2019, it certainly establishes Keir as one of Scotland’s premier pop acts with his soulful emotive delivery of the lyrics and an alt pop sound and imagery that makes you feel like you are watching a story being played out.

This song will be huge get on board with Keir now so you are not left behind when his career rockets to the next level.
