Beta Waves - EP1
Beta Waves are Dundee duo Dale Easson and Harry Crossan, their music is best described as colourful synthpop.
The lads have had a really busy 2020 they have already released Hideaway, U Don’t Have 2 and I Had You Wrong, these are all included in the EP along with 2019 release Ad Lib together with new track Come On Over.
EP1 is released today, Friday 17 July 2020.
The opening track is U Don’t Have 2 and it’s laidback chilled banger. It’s a song full of delightful synths, a beautifully understated drum machine and ultra smooth vocals, it’s a tune that takes you into your dreams to enjoy the farscapes that swirl around in your head, and with a an easy to remember catchy chorus “and it goes on and on, and on and on…… and on and on”, it has you quickly singing along.
U Don’t Have 2 gives nods to 90’s retro pop, but giving it a modern contemporary feel. It’s summer vibes, delivered with fantastic attention to detail, every beat has definition and adds to the production of the track.
The second track is their latest song Come On Over and is for me the pick of the EP which is saying something as every track is a banger.
The melody of Come On Over is just so engaging, it sweeps you along with it’s change of pace and different sounds being brought to the fore as it shapes the melody of the track.
It also tells the tale of a failing relationship summed up by the opening verse as Dale sings “I’ve said it once but I’ll say it again, I’m not singing it’s over you just lost composure, your quivering heart when it covers a sense from that first attraction to the bad reaction on the face of it all”
Come On Over is glittery covered glitzy electro pop at its very best.
Ad Lib is a track that keeps you on your toes, it’s well crafted but loose in its approach from its start with the hip hop like drum beat, to the gorgeous guitar riffs that underlay the track and gives it its glorious dance vibes.
It’s a song that takes you on an enchanting trip where guitar riffs interact with the psychedelic synths and soulful vocals all the way to its bewitching instrumental conclusion this track will stick in your head long after it’s over.
Next up is Hideaway and it an absolute banger, it’s the perfect song for those long Summer evenings !
It starts off with an electro synth, before drum beat kicks in, producing a swirling sound of upbeat pop, perfectly paced disco beat, and smooth lyrics it really is the reason why this duo are definitely a band worth following.
Lyrically the song to me describes the breakdown of a relationship which is a contrast to the upbeat vibe of the song, it starts off with “you’ve been caught breaking hearts before” and continues with the recurrent “hideaway from all the things that you wanted me to say it was never enough and you gave away the rest of what you had on you the day you lost everything”
I really can’t give this song too many platitudes it really is electro pop at its best.
The final track I Had You Wrong is yet another excellent piece of synth pop, Harry delivering great electronic beats alongside Dale’s guitar and sharp vocals.
Lyrically it tells the story of someone waiting for another who doesn’t look like they will show, I loved the lines “don’t hear something to consider, cos you’ll be here to keep us all together, it’s a sad thing when you’re just waiting on the door to ring, it’s hard now to hold a little longer when your deep down and there’s nothing I can do, it’s a sad thing when you’re just waiting on the door to ring, door to ring, door to ring……..…”
There is a fantastic middle section to the track, pure electro pop melodies, you just want be able to stop yourself diving in and throwing some Jagger like moves.
Beta Waves continue to innovate with their superb synth pop, they bring memorable melodies and tunes that just want to make you smile with their glorious sunshine vibes.
Roll on the rest of the year as we see what other magic is up their sleeve!!
