Floodhounds - Something Primeval
Stomping out from Sheffield’s industrial jungle, FloodHounds’ rabble-rousing live shows, infused with startlingly jagged guitars, unexpected distorted harmonica side-swipes and uplifting lyrical ear candy, deliver instantly catchy, powerful tunes. They are Jack Flynn (guitar/vocals), Joel Hughes (bass) and Lauren Greaves (drums/vocals).
Since new bass player Joel Hughes joined Guitarist Jack Flynn and Drummer Lauren Greaves in early 2018, the trio have been selling out headlines in London and Sheffield and playing packed supports for the likes of The Blinders, Calva Louise, BlackWaters Avalanche Party and shared festival stages with False Heads, and Demob Happy.
Championed by BBC Introducing Sheffield, and winners of a Pirate Studios’ National apply to play competition, and joint winners of Sensoria Festival’s Composition award, presented to the band by Steel City musical icon, Richard Hawley.
Their latest single Something Primeval follows FloodHounds last single Out Of Time, which was released December 2019. BBC Introducing described the track as “magnificent” as they named it Record Of The Week and featured in the Top 50 tracks of 2019. Something Primeval is the second of two new tracks the band crowdfunded for to record, with producer Thomas Mitchener, at Broadfield Studios in Watford. Mitch produced Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes first two albums, as well as singles for Strange Bones, BlackWaters, Wargasm, Sheafs & Kid Kapichi.
Something Primeval was released on Friday 15 May 2020 and Is just that, a very primeval sound, and lyrically it’s full of animal references and gives us some blatant over the top outrageous links but not in a bad way.
Commenting on the track songwriter Jack Flynn says:
the song looks at our deeply buried primeval instincts, and whether we should trust them more, keeping out eyes on the prize, surviving and coming together to solve our problems. It’s great fun to play live, it’s heavy but catchy, so people seem to really get on board with it and get stuck in.
The track has a great intro focussing on a strumming bass and drums, before the guitar riff crunches in, it’s loud and has a rawness about it, but the melody is so catchy it really hooks you into the track and has you bouncing along in no time it all, simple but fantastic all in one.
As I said lyrically this song must have been real fun to write with its various animal references, I particularly loved the verse “cause soon the vultures are circling, the snake is stretching his bite, the buffalo are stampeding into the dark of the night”. And the chorus is just outrageously over the top “have you ever felt hunted or easily corrupted, be like the creatures, from tigers, to leeches, they wouldn’t stand for it no, you could be my saviour but I won’t change my behaviour cause in nature’s cathedral, we’re wild primeval, so eyes on the prize if you hope to survive it all”.
Something Primeval is a great track perfect for the world today, it’s catchy as fuck so has you hooked and interested straight from the off and has lyrics that can’t help bring a smile to your face, just even thinking about how Flynn managed to think them up. It’s great feel good rock’n’roll.
