Sienne - Side By Side
Sienne, the Liverpool four piece indie rock band, fronted by Warringtonian singer Calan Nickle, the band also includes James Rookyard, Richard Taylor and Charlie Skeggs.
While the band list the likes of The Stone Roses and Manic Street Preachers as influences, more recent acts such as Blossoms and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds also run through their music.
Taken from the band’s as yet untitled upcoming EP, Liverpool band Sienne release their third single Side By Side today, Friday 17 July, it follows previous singles Coming Alive and Where Is Home which will also feature on the EP.
Frontman Calan Nickle says of the single:
I wrote this song just under a year ago after finding clarity from a low point in my life, I found myself asking why I was writing constantly about the negatives. I had a little moment where I began to see things clearer and this song was written as a message to myself to let go of all the rubbish going on in my head and that I should embrace the new things happening. I wanted the song itself to match the lyrics in how it starts as a no holds barred cry for help, and the understanding comes as the song progresses. For me the song itself is a long, long road from being in a bad place to finding clarity and I think it came to life once we’d finished it in the studio, it’s a very personal song and one that defines what we are as a band, it came from nothing, a darker place and ventured forward into the unknown.
Side By Side is a little slow are paced than the band’s previous releases but that is not to its detriment, as this is a cracking track, it has a very emotive cinematic feel, I can easily imagine it being used in a TV drama.
It opens with glistening guitars, and an emotional vocal that embraces you even before the heavier rhythm section explodes and knocks you off your feet.
It’s a very cleverly produced track as it builds layers of sound gradually into the track as we get heavier guitars and punchier drums before these are then stripped away again to allow that introductory melody to take over again.
Lyrically the song comes from a personal perspective from Calan and this is captured in his emotional vocal throughout, my favourite verse is when he sings “two kids caught in a bar fight for the whole world to see, put that frown away for another day, just wait”.
Side By Side is a fantastic track and builds on the momentum of their previous releases, Sienne have a great future ahead of them and I look forward to the forthcoming EP being released as it is sure to showcase their undoubted talent.
